Favorite George Allen myths, legends, stories, anecdotes and factoids
Hi
I'm really interested in learning more about former Redskins coach George Allen. I know that many Redskins fans have mixed emotions about him, but I really like him and would love to hear more about him - so if anybody has info in any form (stories, anecdotes, etc) feel free to post, I would really appreciate it. A couple of interesting GA tidbits I've heard: -One of GA's former quarterbacks, Roman Gabriel, talked about an experience where he had lunch with GA who reacted negatively to the fact that Gabriel was eating a ham or roast beef sandwich. GA preferred limiting the intake of meat because he considered animals that ended up slaughtered to provide food as "losers" and apparently by ingesting flesh from a "loser" one would be more likely to become a "loser" himself. -GA tried unsuccessfully to recruit a pro wrestler named Andre The Giant to play for him. Andre would likely have been a defensive lineman. |

One story from an old NFL Films tape: Allen would have the Redskins, known as the "Over the Hill Gang" because of the many aged veterans on the team, go out before the game against Dallas in the pregame workout and deliberately look feeble, so that the Cowboys would look at them and think they would be easy to defeat.

Re: Favorite George Allen myths, legends, stories, anecdotes and factoids
He was one coach who did not look at the Cowboys as just a rivalry but truley hated the Cowboys. I heard that he would game plan all year just for the two Cowboy games and took great pride in defeating them and took it personaly. I do not have time to look up his record against them but it was pretty good. They just had on the NFL network the top 10 rivalries and I think Alan against the Cowboys was like number 4 and they talked about how Alan wanted so much to beat the Boys.

I read a story from his son George Allen jr. about when he was a kid.. his dad would be pulling weeds and would say "if i get this weed out whole we will beat the cowboys". he would say that over and over. Now that is a passion to beat Tom Landry. Once said he would take Landry on at the 50 yard line and whip him personally if that meant they would win the game.

there are many!all he really liked to eat was peanut butter sandwiches and milk.how about the one where he called a meeting, came out dressed in a komodo and martial arts expert joone ree who held up a board which coach allen broke in half by a backkick?after he finished he looked at the players and
said-"that's what i'd do to tom landry."lol.he also used a play that at the time president nixon had drawn up.he was a fitness freak too. |
