Cap Question

I was just wondering what happens to a players cap hit like in the case of Vick if he is found guilty and goes to jail? Is there a case that his cap hit would be dropped by the NFL or is this just something a team has to take a hit on? If this is the wrong place for this please move but I have not heard this addressed in any of the Vick talk or any other time a player has legal problems.

Re: Cap Question

The Falcons would have to file a grievance to try to recover most of the signing bonus to make the cap hit smaller. They wouldn't have to pay his base salary because he won't be playing.

Re: Cap Question

The Atlanta owner is really looking like an idiot for being such a Vick homer. Vick probably is toast, and now the Falcons are going to take at least a moderate cap hit with a guy that won't play for awhile if ever.

Re: Cap Question

I'm sure contracts have some sort of legal out for the team in a situation like this. Like steveo said, they'll probably have to file a grievance with the league.

Re: Cap Question

So from what I'm reading if they can get out of his contract then they could avoid some if not all of the cap hit. I've always wondered how this works for a team and a player with legal problems.

Its hard to tell what going through the owners mind at this point and I'm sure there is a ton of legal stuff they have to look into before deciding what to do.

Re: Cap Question

P Kirwan on NFL radio today said he expects them to give Vick a leave of absence, and to recoup signing bonus they'll ask him to take half his salary this year. That'll let them forgo challenging the Ashlie Lelie (sp?) ruling and still get some money back.

I wonder if state laws could effect what they can or cannot do prior to his trial.
