Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
This could lend credence to the rumors that we may trade down with the Texans to #8.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
I really don't know anything about this kid but I've been hoping we'd trade down to draft him and get another pick or two rather than take Adams or Anderson. Hopefully this works out.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
So, I take it our list of DT/DE's to pick with either the #6 or the #8 spot is Okoye, Branch, Adams and Anderson? If all four are gone by that time (unlikely), then I guess we entertain trade offers with whoever to secure more draft picks, including a late first rounder.
Decent sounding scenario: -Trade #6 with houston for #8 and whatever pick. -Draft one of the above DT/DE with the #8. -Keep "whatever pick" and trade #8 to (denver?) for their 1st rounder and additonal picks. Too lazy to look up trade value but I'm sure Gibbs and company have learned from lessons past.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
This seems like better info. It has him listed as being just over 300 lbs.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
This kid is only 19 years old. he could be in the league for 15 years easily. I really like this guy, plus we are gonna get somethin else to trade down and still get our man. We are finally workin all aspects of the offseason instead of tryin to buy all the big names.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
I like Okoye a lot, watched L'ville a few times & he definitely wreaked havoc. Seems like a Gibbs guy too. JLC said the staff is very impressed by him. I'd say he's the favorite at this point.
I haven't seen Adam Carriker play, but I like the sounds of him & he sounds like more of an every down player than Adams & Anderson. |

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
okoye is the SAFEST bet on the DL. huge upside, could be highly productive immediately, well-rounded and he's smart, which is ALWAYS a big plus.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
From NFLDraftScout.com
Amobi Okoye Rated number 2 out of 145 DT's 12 / 2350 TOTAL Combine Invite: Yes Height: 6020 Weight: 302 40 Yrd Dash: 5.07 20 Yrd Dash: 2.87 10 Yrd Dash: 1.65 Wonderlic: 225 Lb. Bench Reps: 29 Vertical Jump: 30 Broad Jump: 9'3" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 3-Cone Drill: 7.46 Positives: Has a shorter than ideal frame, but shows adequate muscle tone, dropping more than 25 pounds of "baby fat" from the start of the 2006 season until arriving at Senior Bowl practices in January...Has the low center of gravity and lower body strength needed to man the nose guard or three-technique position...Plays until the whistle and it is rare to see him throttle down...Has made good strides in finishing on the play and has developed into a quick read-and-react type...Has the short-area explosion to slip past the center shooting the gaps...Keeps his feet on the move and uses his long arm reach effectively to prevent blockers from locking him up...Takes the plays from the chalkboard to the field with no problems...Very combative with his hands when taking on double-team action...Though short, he has the wide framed with a thick chest, loose hips and big thighs to hold ground firmly at the point of attack...Has sudden movements to get on the edge of a blocker, demonstrating natural hand strength and proper position to shed with ease...Very instinctive, reacting quickly to running schemes, as he is a quick twitch type, known to gain immediate advantage off the snap with his explosion...Plays with his head up and has developed a good feel to react quickly to block pressure...Knifes through the line with good urgency and has the natural strength to maintain leverage...His low center of gravity makes it tough for a blocker to move him out, and he shows good quickness in the gaps to disrupt the pocket (needs to finish better once he gets into the backfield, though)...Easily defeats the isolated blocker with strength and all-out effort...Is best when he gets on the center's head, as it allows him to burst quickly into the backfield to push the pocket...Adequate at flushing the quarterback out, but needs to be quicker when closing...Stacks the run at the point of attack, coming off the snap with a low, powerful leg drive...His low center of gravity allows him to gain leverage and opponents must use double-team blocking in order to contain him, as his hand usage usually knocks the blockers off stride...Does a good job of bending his knees and opening his hips to stack blocks and split the double team...Very active with his hands, working them across the face to defeat blockers...Takes good angles to the ball playing off the line, and is most effective when utilized to clog the inside rush lanes rather than pursue the passer. Negatives: Shorter than ideal, causing problems when he fails to keep his hands active trying to fill the rush lanes and the center gets assistance in blocking him out (susceptible to cut blocks)...Can push the pocket, but seems to lack the closing burst needed to get to the quarterback consistently (needs to finish better)...His size could be a problem in a one-gap system...While he delivers punishing hand swipes in closed quarters, he can get reckless while operating in space...Does not possess sustained speed to pursue long distances, working better in the short area...Lost bulk to improve his stamina, but needs to put some back on to compete against the bigger blockers at the pro level...Very good in run containment, but he lacks pass rush moves despite eight sacks as a senior...Can move laterally with some effectiveness, but will struggle to redirect and is slow to recover when taking a wide loop in backside pursuit...Can push the pocket and has good initial quickness, but lacks the sudden speed to close on the quarterback...Even though he is known to clog the middle, only two of his 55 tackles in 2006 came inside the red zone. Compares To: JONATHAN BABINEAUX-Atlanta...Neither player can be measured on his size, as their heart and desire to make the play are their biggest assets. Both show a good short-area burst and excellent upper body strength to clog the middle and split double teams. While neither is known for his pass rushing skills, both are quite effective at keeping their feet and anchoring to shut down the inside rush lanes. |

Plus they have 4 full seasons of film on him compared to only 3 on Branch and/or Anderson. He's less likely to bust if the scouts like him.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
I think Houston wants him too, but they probably wouldn't trade up to get him.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
I haven't seen extensive film on Okoye but I know I don't like Alan Branch. He is a bust waiting to happen, plays high, low motor, doesn't play behind the line of scrimage. I watched him during the Rose Bowl and was very disappointed dispite the fact that the commentators talked him up the whole game. I think Okoye is the best bet at DT and #8 is probably as far as the Skins can drop and be pretty well assured of taking him as the Dolphins might be interested in him at #9. If the Skins traded with the Texans the difference in value between picks 6 and 8 is 200 points. That would get the Skins the Texans 3rd round pick (#73 overall, valued at 225 points). A good trade to drop and get the guy you really want plus an a high third.
I think Okoye is the guy the should be targeting. I'm not high on Gaines Adams as he is small and a very similar body type to Andre Carter. Not stout against the run and I'm not convinced he will be a dynamic pass rusher in the mould of a Dwight Freeny. I haven't seen anything from Anderson, but I do know that Mike Mayock does not like him much. From what I've seen of Adam Carriker he looks good, but tends to play too high. You could probably correct that pretty easily with coaching and so I think he would probably be my second choice behind Okoye. Both would be there at #8. If the Skins do want an elite DE/DT they probably wouldn't want to go too much further down so this might be preferable to the trade that was discussed with Denver a couple of weeks ago.

Re: Are we adressing our D-line?
The question is, is Okoye valuable enough to another team that he could be taken before the #8 pick, assuming we do trade places with Houston?
The way his stock seems to be rising, especially on this board, let's hope he's still there if we trade down. |
