Have We Seen The Last of Archuleta in a Skins Uniform?
On behalf of holmester (who can't start a thread of his own yet, I had thought about starting this as well actually)
washingtonpost.com "Redskins Notes: The Redskins faced a deadline yesterday to exercise $5 million options on safety Adam Archuleta, according to league sources, and Lloyd. They executed Lloyd's option, but reached an agreement with Archuleta to push back his deadline. Both players are guaranteed the money in one form or another, but the decision to delay the move for Archuleta could be a bid to buy more time in order to trade or perhaps cut him." So what does it all mean? Is he on the way out? Are they holding off on the option to see how much some other moves might cost? Is this much ado about nothing?

Re: Have We Seen The Last of Archuleta in a Skins Uniform?
archuleta played horrible last year, this we all know. however, what most of us know but cant see is the fact that archuleta is as hard a worker off the field as any player in the nfl and regardless of his performance (last year being the worst due to a new system), all of us fans can rest assured that he will bounce back.
my opinion is that he should stay. we'll get nothing for him if we were to trade and cutting him will cost us. if no one else will, i stand by adam and support him, he is a skin isn't he?

All that money and the cap hit we'd take to cut him, plus our emphasis thus far in the offseason on defense, might as well keep him around to see if we can squeeze some production out of that ridiculous contract he got. Keep in mind people that our entire defense, not just AA, stunk out loud in '06..

I say keep adam. We cannot absorb a major cap hit , likr the one that comes along with him being cut. and with any luck with our db situation he shud be able to make a difference this year

Re: Have We Seen The Last of Archuleta in a Skins Uniform?
I don't understand why people keep saying we can't absorb Arch's cap hit. He has a 9 mil release fee, but is due a 2.5 mil salary. That means it costs the team 6.5 mil to release him. We have 10 million right now. Why did we push back other players salaries and not sign free agents unless we had a plan to release a big cap hit guy? As I have said before, maybe they have a deal in place to trade for Bly and need money for him, or if that doesn't work, they will cut Arch.

Re: Have We Seen The Last of Archuleta in a Skins Uniform?
interesting scenario, I'm sure this is done sometimes w/players we just don't hear of it often. It would certainly seem that we're looking at all options, or maybe he & his agent are looking at ways to get him out.
I wonder how much of his play last year could be attributed to the supposed coaching rift between safeties & corners. Granted he's never been a cover guy, but it wouldn't help to have 2 coaches telling you to play 2 different ways. ST also was out of place & bit on a lot of play action fakes. Loyd better shut up & play ball. I still wouldn't be surprised if he's either benched or let go by season's end. |

AA could be traded to a team who use the cover 2 system and be quite effective (Bears) he has value for us to get picks. It' s not like he was a PR nightmare. I hope we package him with Springs to get houston's 2nd & 3rd round or something

The only way they should let him out of here is if he gives up bonus money like Lavar did.

I've been going blue in the face trying to get people to understand this around these parts. The Skins have cleared $10 million in cap space. Rookies will fit in about $3-$4 million of space. They're clearly preparing to take a big cap hit. If they kept Springs, he'll cost $7.3 million as his contract stands now. If they trade him, he'll essentially cost us the same thing. So even after trading him, we'll still have $10 million in space. The writing is on the wall; they cleared this cap space to release somebody, absorb the hit now, and clear them off of our troubled 2008 and 2009 books. This move by the Skins in delaying Archuleta's payment is clearly a sign that the team is preparing to make a move. He's as good as gone in my opinion.

I think if they're gonna cut him, they just need to go ahead and do it and take the cap this year instead of next. They're gonna need the cap spcae next season.

And people, what's with all this crap about holding out hope that he can still be a player for us? I guess it's been a while since we've seen a Redskins game, but seriously now. The guy SUCKS in coverage. He's totally worthless in our defense.

Re: Have We Seen The Last of Archuleta in a Skins Uniform?
It's all relative, it would be crazy to think that AA will suddenly become a guy we can match up on even a #4 wr.
But can he match up w/a TE or play decent zone coverage in the flats? I think there's a chance of that. He consistently got beat by TEs (Witten), but if there was really a problem w/the coaching in the secondary, compounded by him losing his confidence, then it's quite possible that he could rebound to be a decent 2nd team safety at least. He did suck in 06, no doubt, but as someone else here said, the whole D did. ST & CR both had tough years, CR seemed to take a step back from his rookie year. There were definitely system problems & AA looked the worst. Not to mention, AC hardly showed up till the 2nd half of the year. I would judge his value based on medical history more so than last year's performance. If he really can't get back to form because of his neck or back injuries (don't know the history there), then it might be best to cut our losses. Also, if he's unhappy & will be bad for team morale. |
