1st Round Picks tend to be 4 Star Recruits Coming out of High School
I was on Rivals100.com the other day looking at the profiles of this years upcoming first round picks and I noticed something. Most of the prospects were 3 or 4 star recruits coming out of high school. Hell Alex Smith (the QB) was a two star prospect, Jeff Samarzda was a three star prospect (yes I know hes going to the Cubs). Anyway heres some examples of the rivals100.com ratings of this years blue chip prospects (for the Draft) when they were seniors in high school.
2007 NFL Draft Brady Quinn QB Joe Thomas OL Leon Hall DB Alan Branch OL (DT for Michigan) Marshawn Lynch RB Charles Johnson DE Quentin Moses DE Gaines Adams TE (Yes, Gaines Adams was a TE coming out of HS) Adrian Peterson RB Theodore Ginn, Jr DB Tony Gonzalez DB Troy Smith QB Levi Brown DT (OT from Penn State) Jamaal Anderson WR (The DE out of Arkansas that will be a top 10 pick this year) JaMarcus Russell QB Calvin Johnson WR Dwayne Jarrett ATH LaRon Landry ATH Reggie Nelson DB Jarvis Moss DE Lawrence Timmons LB Amobi Okoye OL DeMarcus Tyler DT Other Picks from previous drafts Odell Thurman LB 6-1 Vernon Davis TE Donte Whitner DB Bobby Carpenter LB Santonio Holmes WR A.J. Hawk LB Tamba Hali DE Reggie Bush RB Darnell Bing DB Winston Justice OL Mike Williams WR D'Brickashaw Ferguson OL Kedric Golston DT Manny Lawson DE John McCargo DT Mario Williams DE

thats interesting. almost seems to me that the lower stars worked alot harder than the 5 star players.

good players tend to become good players... surprise! still, a lot of 4 star HS players end up going low in the draft too.

Re: 1st Round Picks tend to be 4 Star Recruits Coming out of High School
My point is that this past signing day I was watching everyone make a big deal about all these 5-Star recurits when in reality the guys that are going to be making an impact at the next level are the guys that are in the four star range. I mean think about it, Miami QB Kyle Wright was the #1 prospect 5 years ago. This year he'll be lucky to be drafted. Mario Williams was rated the 90th best prospect overall in his senior class. This year only two prospects that will go in the top ten picks of the draft this year were 5 star recruits coming out of high school.

Scouting is an inexact science though. Not all 5 star prospects are going to have 5 star talent and every once in awhile, 3 star prosects will be superstars. Sometimes, high school coaches cant find the position where a guy is best at. Thus he gets ranked low, changes his position and becomes a stud at the college level. Great research though.

Re: 1st Round Picks tend to be 4 Star Recruits Coming out of High School
there's only about 500000000 times more 4 star prospects. you name kyle wright, but what about reggie bush? ted ginn? adrian peterson? a lot of the 5 stars end up alright too.
