Steelers hire Tomlin

ESPN.com - NFL - Sources: Steelers set to name Vikes' Tomlin as coach

How did Grimm not get this job? Where does he go now? Let the Grimm to DC discussion start in earnest.

Re: Steelers hire Tomlin

The hire does not make sense becasue I'm sure he's going to install that cover two and get rid of all the blitzing. But perhaps he simply interviews better than Grimm. Who knows?

You just never know with the Rooneys. All along, it appears they didn't even want Whisenhunt.

Now (if the report turns out to be accurate) they go outside the organization, which nobody thought they'd do, and hire a virtual unknown among the concensus up-and-coming coaching names.

Their hiring of Bill Cowher was sort of surprise, from what I remember.

Big rumor is Grimm going to Arizona to be the offensive coordinator. Dan Henning might still go there as well, though not as likely.

I may not phrase this right, so bear with me. Do you think because the Rooney family was so instrumental in implementing the Rooney rule that states teams with coaching vacancies must interview minorities, they felt obliged to hire one?

Re: Steelers hire Tomlin

Grimm probably have been the next Andy Reid. I'm not sure exactly where Mike Tomlin came from but if you look at what's happening all around the league, defensive coaches are doing pretty well. Specially those with a Tampa background.

Only time will tell if the Steelers made the right choice.

Nonsense. Teams hire people because they can get the job done and to be frank two African American coaches are in the championship game (Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith). No one said anything about race when Gibbs got hired even though he was a no-name. Or when Andy Reid came out of no where and got the Eagles Job. I'm pretty sure Tomlin didn't get the job because the Rooney family felt they should hire an African American coach.

Uhh, don't these two sentences contradict each other?

What I meant to say was:

I wouldn't be surprised if that is a main reason he got the job. I have no problem with it unless he bombs. Then it shows how color shouldn't be a factor either way.

I would hope not. When will the day come when the best man gets the job? Regardless of race.

But if this rule was not in place I don't think there would be barely any black head caoches. The bottom line is most of the owners did not grow up around not only black people but minorties in general. So they hire white coaches becasue that's who they are most comfortable relating too.

Look at the college level? There are only a couple black coaches out of 106 jobs?? That's just ridicules. Some places you will never ever see a black HC. You will never see a black HC at Alamama, Tenn, Mississippi, Georgia or Auburn. It will never happen. Sly Croom should have got the job over Shula at Ala. He was way more qualifield. The problem is very similar to the pros. The boosters and AD's are all white and they are not 100% comfortable with being around black people. Sad but true.

Perhaps Grimm just isn't the golden boy waiting in the wings that some want him to be?
