Excessive celebration?

Check this out. State championship. 50 seconds left. QB runs it in for the TD. Gets flagged for excessive celbration. The 15 yard penalty takes the kicker out of his extra point range (I guess he doesn't have a strong leg)so the coach is forced to go for two (the win rather than tie) which they don't get and lose the game.

Judge for yourself:

Re: Excessive celebration?

If true, that's awful. The QB appears to have handled it with class, though.

Re: Excessive celebration?

Man, that's crap. Couldn't the head official (or group of them) overrule it if it was an obvious bad call, which it was?

Re: Excessive celebration?

Wow. Thats terrible. The officials not only looked bad on the call but the ref looked like a complete ass trying to handle the ball as it was tossed to him. I guess thats what they penalized him for "referee clumsiness"

Re: Excessive celebration?

that's pretty bad...especially in such an important game like that. bet that team will just hand the ball to a Ref on each TD next season. no celebrations, no fun.

Re: Excessive celebration?

I think the excessive celebration rule is total BS. Who in the hell decided that celebrating is a BAD thing -- especially after such a big play? When did we decide that celebrating is not a part of sports -- even if excessive?

Re: Excessive celebration?

It looked like the ref wasn't paying attention and got hit in the head with the ball as it was tossed... I wonder if it was him who called the penalty after he got hit with the ball and looked stupid.

Re: Excessive celebration?

That's a horrible call. And in an important game like that one is what makes it even more ridiculous. The refs need to stop throwing the flag for every little thing they think breaks the rule, and just let the kids play some football.

Now that I've seen the video, that's my thought, too. Refs at the high school level are a touchy bunch, in all sports.

first off, why did the video feed cut out so shortly. We all know some overzealous reporters (in order to make a story) will cut and paste film to make things look that way. Oddly enough, the kid gives the ball to the ref, and no flag was thrown, but we see a flag in a separate segment. Hmmm, is it possible the kid did over celebrate but it wasn't on that blip of film? Just a thought.
If not, then I agree that was not over celebration.

On a side note, did you guys see the Family guy episode when Peter joins the Patriots and has a whole excessive celebration planned? The shipoopie song is a riot. The refs and the team get into it...it was a classic.

Thanks for the link TAFKAS! I have it saved on my DVR, but it no matter when I watch it, it makes me laugh!
Now THAT is excessive celebration! Totally worth the 15 yard penalty though!

Re: Excessive celebration?

The excessive celebration rule here in VA is beyond ridiculous. You can't spike the football. A basic little celebration like that is a penalty. You essentially annot do anything. Any type of celebration gets flagged.

Taking out excessive celebration should not mean taking out the excitement of a touchdown. Its a shame it has come to this. Thanks Deion...you jackass.
