F... eating at work
Food in the office, what's up with this?
It's always someone's birthday, retirement, promotion, etc., and every situation calls for a damn feast of bagels, pizza, donuts, cookies, brownies, cakes, cupcakes, candy, etc. And then there are the people that have food pantries at their freaking desks. I've seen people that have more food at their desk than I have in my entire house! |

Ever seen Jim Gaffigan's stand up about birthdays at the office? Hysterical.

Re: F... eating at work
I hate eating at work too. I have to get away. Even though when I eat in my office it feels like my lunch break is two hours. But that's also two hours extra I'm in my office.

Re: F... eating at work
I like eating lunch at my desk. It allows me to get on here a bit more often.
But I do hate the cake/bagels/donuts to celebrate every little thing. Especially when it involves singing happy birthday to Joe Schmoe from down the hall who I've never talked to. Last year I did not receive a piece of cake and this year I was told that I would be the first to receive one... Milton, just pass!

Re: F... eating at work
We always do a group birthday party at the end of each month, which is always miserable. It's like the office period.
So last month it was my turn but to my horror I found out that I had the only birthday in November, so everyone in the office had to sing to me. But I think the worst part is that I don't like birthday cake; you should have seen the dirty looks I got when I dropped that bomb. I thought I was about to get fired on the spot. A Happy Birthday indeed.

Re: F... eating at work
It just so happens we have a pizza party on the 15th and guess what? Everyone has to bake a cake and bring it in. Cake + Pizza....ummm. Yum!
We had our x-mass party two weeks ago too. We had it at a nice micro brewery. They even gave us a 6-pack as gifts. I heard some got greedy after I left and took 2 to 3 6-packs. I know, I should have stayed longer!

For someone like myself who trys to avoid carbs, the office is very unforgiving. I feel like the little kid in those commercials getting approached by drug dealers at the playground.

Re: F... eating at work
I used to hate eating at my desk, but ever since having a kid, I try to get out as early as possible. I still eat out a couple of times a week, though.

Re: F... eating at work
I always bring my lunch to work. It gives me a chance to read the paper. I hate going out because I feel so rushed and I can't enjoy my meal. Not like I even work hourly or anything, but I get so freaking busy at work it seems like if I'm not there I miss something important...
I DO hate the parties, though. I mean, its not like anyone's there because the really care or anything, but they just want a piece of cake... and have you ever had a lady at work bring in something they made and were very proud of that tasted like garbage and then you told them it tasted like garbage???? you'll make an enemy for life... just warning you...

Re: F... eating at work
At my old job, I took an hour for lunch...was able to go out and enjoy myself and not feel rushed. Since my commute is now 90 minutes each way, I try to cram everything I can into 8-8.5 hours. Which includes eating lunch at my desk, while trying to read over html code. Or if I run out to do errands, I always bring food back and eat it here. For the most part, it's 2 sandwiches, some fruit and a yogurt.
My boss's AA organizes a potluck every 4-6 weeks. Which is cool because you can sample what other people call food. For the most part, it's good...and you learn who's food to avoid. Today, my boss is having a retirement "open house", with food. Sandwiches, wraps, salad, cookies and brownies. But I certainly understand where Matty's coming from. Everytime someone brings something in, you feel a certain obligation to try it...

Re: F... eating at work
I don't get any breaks, so I have to eat at my desk. I really hate it, because my office sucks the big one. It's about 15x15 feet, with no windows, hotter than Satan's asshole, with several computers running that sound like helicopters, tractors, locomotives, etc -- and I share it with another person. There's about 5 square feet of space to move -- literally.
Yeah, I don't get any "breaks", per se, but that doesn't mean I work non-stop (or even much at all)

Re: F... eating at work
That's EXACTLY how I'm feeling right now. I'm trying to drop about ten pounds before my wedding and there's ALWAYS some kind of cake and shit laying around. Just this week our department AND the University have huge Christmas parties going on.

Re: F... eating at work
So here's the question:
What food items do you keep at work? Me, bag of chips or microwave popcorn and the biggest bottle of ibuprofen I can find.
