Run the damn football!
Why did Portis only have 14 carries yesterday?
Why did Betts only have 2 carries? We have a 254 pound hammer on the bench in Duckett... where is he?? This article by Thomas Boswell sums things up perfectly on offense. We need to say the hell with these cutesy reverses and end arounds, and get back to playing smashmouth football. This is what this offense is built for and it plays right to our strength. I think Gibbs needs to tell Saunders to put together a back to basics game plan from here on out and let's scrap the majority of his infamous 700 page playbook. If we want to win folks, we have to run. It's very simple. Control the clock, dominate the opponent, and keep our seriously hurting 'D' off the field as much as possible. Let's get back to Redskins football! |

Re: Run the damn football!
That would be nice. i only assumed Portis would of ran at least 25 times against a rush D like ours

Re: Run the damn football!
The thing is, Saunders probably isn't an 1/8 deep into his playbook yet...the offense hasn't shown they can handle it, and has had to do more max protection to keep the defenses off Brunell's ass.
Running the football has been the cornerstone of the Skins offense. It's time to start running the ball, even if coming from behind.

Re: Run the damn football!
The Colts are ripe for the picking if we just pound the ball down their freaking throats. We're a team right now that is perfectly built for playing smashmouth. We have a physical OL and very nice depth at RB. So what's the problem?

Re: Run the damn football!
I kind of agree with you. However, let's say they can run the football on the Colts. I assume they can. The big problem is gonna be that they can't cover Harrison and Wayne OR stop Rhodes and Addai. So, then you have to go to the pass at some point. Where are they then?

Re: Run the damn football!
we were running the ball. it was just the WRs who were doing it.
Saunders tried to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers by bypassing the whole 'throwing the ball' thing. the middle of the field between safeties doesn't exist to our offense and defenses can just safely compress 8-men in the box, with the safeties covering the sidelines, even Moss, ARE, and Portis can't break through.

Re: Run the damn football!
I'd love to, and I'd imagine the entire offensive line and running backs are wondering the same thing.

Re: Run the damn football!
I definately agree that we need to run the ball more, but I think that is going to be hard to do when defenses don't respect your deep ball (because you have none) and your plating from behind because your defense can't stop anyone.

Re: Run the damn football!
I really don't believe that. We ran the ball down people's throats last year and they knew exactly what was coming. Teams like the Steelers have the same approach, they run the ball and they don't care if their opponent knows what's coming. It's all about commiting to that style of play and dominating your opponent at the line of scrimmage, which is something we've shown we can do. Right now we're not commited to anything.

We should have pounded it. No doubt. I was yelling that the whole time.

Re: Run the damn football!
Well all I know is our current offensive approach is not working. It's time to try something different and get back to basics. What do we have to lose?
