Redskins Rewind: Nov. 2, 1986-Vikings at Redskins

REDSKINS REWIND

Nov. 2, 1986-Vikings at Redskins

First off, I’d like to apologize for channeling my inner-BrudLee and not contributing my weekly column on a weekly basis. I’m going to take a little detour from recapping the 1991 Super Bowl season and instead share with you a game from 1986, because Sunday's game against Jacksonville reminded me of this '86 battle.

In early November of 1986 the Minnesota Vikings came into RFK stadium boasting an explosive offense and a top-5 defense. Early on it seemed like an easy Redskins victory as they took an immediate 10-0 lead. But the Vikings and QB Tommy Kramer were just getting started. Two touchdowns by the Vikings, including a 67-yard pass by Kramer, gave the Vikings a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Redskins took the lead right back on a botched Vikings snap. Dexter Manley picked up the fumbled ball and rumbled in for the touchdown. The Redskins didn’t convert the extra point when Max Zendejas had his kick blocked.

The Redskins entered the locker room down 17-16 at halftime. After Tommy Kramer fired a 68-yard TD early in the third quarter, Redskins RB George Rogers did his best John Riggins impression breaking a tackle on 4th and short and taking it 40 yards for a TD. Kramer wasted no time responding, launching a 76-yard TD less than two minutes later to close the third quarter. It was Kramer’s 4th TD pass of the game, to go along with his 490 yards passing.

At the start of the 4th quarter the Vikings held a 26-24 lead. Fast forward to midway through the 4th. The Vikings held a 12 point lead over the Redskins. QB Jay Schroeder led the team down the field, capped by a 30-yard TD pass to Hall-of-Famer (that’s right, I went there) Art Monk to close the gap to six points. Once again though, Zendejas missed the extra point. With a minute left, the Redskins scored yet again on another Rogers TD run. An extra point would surely seal the seemingly improbable comeback victory. But the third time was not the charm for Zendejas as he missed his third extra point of the day. So instead of sending the fans home happy with a 41-38 Redskins win, the game went into overtime.

It was a quick overtime. The Redskins won the coin toss and wasted no time ending the game. Four plays into the OT Schroeder hit Gary Clark who took off 40 yards down the left sideline for the game-winner. A walk-off touchdown!

I remember that pass to GC-- a little curl, his little spin move, and he was gone! That was a sweet victory.
