Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Just some highlights for those who haven't seen it.
-Said we were inconsistent across the board, offense, defense, special teams. -He praised the punting game, 37 yard net. -Defense gave up too many "explosive" plays. -Our offense had a couple of nice long drives but didn't finish. -We had 5 plays over 20 yards. -One big play away from winning the game. -He backed up Hall and expressed his confidence in him. -Turning in the Taylor penalty to the league. Said he didn't lead with his helmet. -Good 2-minute drill to get into position for the FG. -Duckett was basically the odd man out with Betts and Portis playing. He went on to praise Portis. He's one of the top players in the league. -Overall theme was inconsistency. |

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
He also said they'd turn in the video of the Prioleau injury -- something about a player taking a cheap shot?
It didn't look like Pierson was touched. Did I hear him right? I also didn't think "inconsistency" was the right way to describe the defense, specifically the secondary. They were about as consistent as it gets -- at letting Viking wideouts get open. |

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
prioleau was by himself when he got hurt (got up from a 2man pile, took two steps, then yanked up his leg after hurting his acl on a turf gremlin).
It was VERY clear and they replayed it. just walking in the open field and coming up limp. same as hayward on sunday and jansen two years ago. acl's are super easy to spot, cause they usually involve someone walking by himself, yanking their leg up (as a reaction after hurting it) and falling down. and then, BAM, out for a year, and gimpy for another couple months after that :/ I was actually looking for the chat link (couldn't find it) so i could tell everyone he was gone for the year right when it happened. |

Yeah D was consistantly bad. Taylor had some good plays as did Washington. Thought Marshall, Holdman and Rocky played ok, but main weakness was in CB coverage and run defense. Hopefully Williams will employ Jedi mind tricks to make our inside line push toward the ball as opposed to bending the other way.

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Did he mention the defense not tackling well? I felt like the vikings consistantly got an extra yard or two after the first hit, and that kind of thing obviously helped them keep drives alive.

I like that he's sticking up for Taylor, but is that really one of the most important things to do this week? Although, if it gets the refs to contemplate the possibility that a close hit by him might not be a penalty, it could save us a bad call down the road, 'cause Taylor's gonna hit people.

Any chance he's trying to save Taylor from getting fined by the league for that hit?

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Once they see the replay I don't see how they could fine Taylor. He clearly hit him with his shoulder and he even pulled up a bit. He could have totally lit him up but he actually showed some restraint. The call was just horrible.

Gibbs actually praised the punting? Bhaa haaa haa!!! I'm sorry, but Gibbs must've seen something none of the rest of us had seen.

A 37 yard net is pretty good no matter how you look at things.
Frost did his job. |

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
I thought punting was fine--except the first punt. I remember an excellent punt that was downed around the 5 yard line. I must say I was surprised, and 37 NET yards is pretty darn good.

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
I can't remember - did the Vikes do anything with the good field position after Frost's first crappy punt? Frost needs to have a few consecutive games with no shanks before I would say he is doing his job. Nobody should be satisfied with him shanking one per game, regardless of how the rest of the punts turn out.

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Blindly sticking with Hall is bound to cost us another game, two or three. We should at least bring in a few kickers for try-outs.

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Frost kicked pretty well. But Gibbs being locked into Hall has me worried too. When Gibbs likes a guy he is very stubborn about changing things, so it'll be Hall for a while. Let's hope Gibbs is correct, and he snaps out of it.

Re: Gibbs presser 9/12/06
Good idea - it (sort of) worked with Frost.
