'Skins cut Trotter, Fiore and Canidate

Any thoughts?

Trotter was no surprise and neither is Fiore, the guy's knees are shot. Canidate is a mild surprise I guess, but I think most of us saw this coming. That clears up some cap room for this year, around $5M I believe, but about $3M is allocated to the rookie cap.

I'm kind of surprised that Fiore and Canidate were early cuts. There isn't any penalty for letting them come to training camp and measure up against the other players. However, if their injuries hadn't yet healed and don't show signs of doing so, it's the only move to make.

If they can still be productive, I wish them luck wherever they can be picked up.

I think their injuries were the main factor in their release, the staff would probably rather give other guys serious looks and move on.

Canidate will catch on somewhere quickly, his speed will always entice someone into signing him. Fiore may be facing retirement, but from what Bugel said he would make a fine coach someday.

a little off topic, but I read somewhere that Fiore is only 29, just two years older than Trung.....

When I look at them I would have guessed Fiore was like mid 30's. and Trung looks about ..oh...14.

I was just thinking about this. I don't know....Maybe I didn't get a good night sleep. Sorry

If Sam Adams becomes available, we should make an attempt to sign him....if the price is reasonable. I know everyone is saying we need a pass rush DE more than a DT.
But I think LB's Arrington and Washington will be great as our nickel and dime pass rushers. We could really use a run stopper like Sam Adams to solidify our d-line. The DE we have are adequate enough to be part of a good defense if we get Adams.

I guess the only real surprise is Canidate, but if he's not part of the solution here best to just let him go now and let him latch on somewhere else. I wish him well

No surprises!

No surprises, at all! The rumors were there for months for all three.

Does anyone know if we are "ahead" in dead cap money this year vs next? I would assume that only Trotter and Fiorie count towards next year. If memory serves me correct we are over $6M in dead cap money for this upcoming year. So it would seem that we are at around the same amount of dead money for this year and next. Can anyone confirm?

I am thinking sultan had as much to do with trung's release as anything, he has big time speed, and is more of a polished football player.

Fiore:

Not surprised he was cut but I'm sorry it had to be that way. This is a guy who had "the right work ethic"; he was a "workroom wonder". Problem is that his injuries took away his quickness/speed/agility/explosiveness. The skins took a gamble signing him a year ago and the dice came up "craps" on that roll. But the gamble was worth taking...

Canidate:

Has one redeeming talent; he is FAST. He is not rugged; he is not super-tough; he is not a game breaker; he is injured a lot. The Skins went after him to increase team speed and Candate certainly did that except for one thing - - he wasn't good enough to be on the field all the time and so his speed was of little value on the sidelines. Here is an equation to keep in mind:

Canidate = Journeyman

Trotter:

An overpaid underachiever who is a legend in his own mind. Best you can say of him is that he is slightly above average as an inside linebacker but he thinks he is a STAR and wants to be paid like one and treated like one. Absent injuries to about 4 linebackers, he will not be missed here.

In the right system Trotter could regain some of his former Pro Bowl form. He's not the same league as Ray Lewis, not even close, but he is still a quality LB.

SC makes a good point, Fiore would have been a great Gibbs/Bugel kinda player if he was healthy. He's versatile, strong as an ox and has a great work ethic. Sucks to see a guy like him go out like this.

I guess it's not impossible that Fiore could get re-signed by the Redskins - maybe they are just interested in lowering his base, and couldn't get anything worked out.

What is the cap hit for Fiore's release?

Our dead cap for 2004, including Trotter and Fiore, is $9.2M.

Next year Trotter will count $4.648M and Fiore $750K, bringing our 2005 dead cap to about $5.4M.

Sidenote: In 2004 the Skins will use $9.2M (11.4%) of the cap on dead money, and another $8.75M (11%) on Samuels. Just thought I'd pass that ugly note along.
