Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

Last night I was having discussions with some of my lifelong Redskins associates and the subject of Springs injury was front and center. While many other players went through various surgeries and rehabs during the off-season we were wondering why he was not amoung them considering the problem he's having now is a carry-over from the end of last season. Despite the fact he participated in all the mini-camps and the first pre-season game, the question becomes how many think he should have had [what was a lingering problem] corrected during the offseason as opposed to waiting for the situation to worsen and now perhaps cause him to miss valuable time.

Re: Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

It's very possible it just didn't become a serious issue until recently.

Look at how long it took them to finally get John Hall's correct diagnosis.

Surgery is always a last resort in any situation. Muscle tears can always be corrected with rest and rehab, but complete tears need to be cut on. Depending on the location of tears, it's tough to diagnose them even with MRIs.

Springs probably rehabed it to the point where it felt good then reaggrivated it. Gibbs players are though guys and I am sure minor pain is not unusual for him after 8+ years in the league.

Yeah; i'd say its probaboly somthing that he and advisors told him would not be a problem once he felt good. This is a little bit different than the Coles toe problem where he knew it was going to be re-aggravated and still didnt want surgery (Because that could have ended his career if it went wrong or somthing). I'm assuming its just bad luck, no reason to question his motives I wouldnt think.

I dont think anyone here is qualified to answer that question from a medical and insight perspective really. Good question though, I dont think Shawn avoided or didnt take any steps to not be 100%.

Re: Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

The post just had an article on it. It said that he was healthy all offseason. He felt fine during all the practices and played the scrimmage and first pre-season game.

Their point was that if it had been a problem he would have addressed it.

I'm not a doctor but I do have a pretty extensive medical background from doing insurance claims for 4+ years.

But you're right, ultimately it's the team doctors that make the call. If Springs required surgery months ago, he would have had it.

Re: Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

It seems like if it was mid season he would play with it hoping not to do any more damage. It is wise to have this done now so hopefully it won't be a problem in the middle of the season or possibly the playoffs.

We must have missed the post article in reference to his injury. The subject only came up because if memory serves me correctly Shawn missed a game or two late last season, and groin injuries sometime take a long time to heal properly. It was more of whether his injury was properly diagnosed or if he thought rest would be sufficient to a surgical procedure to repair whatever was wrong.

Re: Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

I don't think Springs or Tyer or anyone else thought it would be an issue as they entered into training camp. Springs was hurting in January, but by the time OTA's came around he was healthy and ready to go again. It wasn't bothering him at that point so everyone probably thought the coast was clear. Now that they've gotten back to hitting and having more intense workouts, I'm sure it got reaggravated, and now they have addressed it properly.

I don't think anything could have been done any differently. Hindsight 20/20.

I think he is just pulling a T.O.

I'm not a doctor... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

I don't want to suggest anything contrary to what you're saying, BUT he is a 30ish FA with a huge SB and we all know the history here.

Re: Questioning Shawn Springs Motives

No need to question Springs, he's been a warrior for the two years he's been a Skin. He's three years into a $10 mil signing bonus, he's no TO.

Love the conspiracy theory angle though.
