Redskins Sign Posey, Folau; Release Three

By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
August 15, 2006

The Redskins have signed linebacker Jeff Posey, offensive lineman Spencer Folau and running back A.J. Harris, the team announced on Tuesday. To make room for the three new players, the Redskins waived linebacker Chris Clemons, running back Kerry Carter and defensive back Ben Emanuel with injury settlements.
Jeff Posey (Getty Images) Clemons and Carter both suffered serious knee ligament injuries in last Sunday's preseason opener against Cincinnati. Clemons would have been sidelined 4-6 weeks and Carter would have been forced to miss the entire season.
Posey, 6-4 and 241 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran who began his career with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 1997.
Posey spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills under current Redskins cornerbacks coach and former Bills defensive coordinator Jerry Gray.
Regarded as a strong, hold-the-point-of-attack linebacker, Posey served as the starting strong-side linebacker for the Bills the last three seasons. He was playing at the weak-side linebacker position until the Bills released him on Aug. 7, 2006.
Posey, who played his college ball at Southern Mississippi, has appeared in 123 games with 76 starts and totaled 357 tackles (221 solo), 20.5 sacks, two interceptions and eight forced fumbles.
In 2005, Posey appeared in 16 games with 15 starts for the Bills and recorded 68 tackles (47 solo), three sacks and eight pressures.
Folau, 6-5 and 310 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran who has spent time on the rosters of Baltimore, Miami and, most recently, New Orleans.
Folau, who played his college ball at Idaho, has appeared in 91 career NFL games with 43 starts.
Folau was waived by the Saints in August 2005 and spent last season out of football. He will add depth to an offensive line corps that has a collection of young, inexperienced backups.
Harris, 6-1 and 230 pounds, is a first-year player who appeared in 43 games during his career at Northern Illinois. During his college career, he rushed for 1,687 yards on 342 carries and recorded 12 touchdowns. He also recorded 31 catches for 197 receiving yards.
Harris was try-out for the Redskins during their 2006 rookie camp at Redskins Park.

Tell me why we signed Posey? Traded up to get Rocky, we need a CB. The Injury to Clemons shouldnt have led to posey. maybe this move indicates we will be playing more 3-4 at times trying to cover more of the field with CB injuries. Thats my view on it.

Man McIntosh did look good against CINs reserves. We can't get into the what if we drafted CB "X" though now. Should we? Aren't training camps useful at all? Kerry Carter is a bum. And it was hard to tell which reserve OLs were doing a good job on his own.

First of all i'm not upset on the Posey signing at all b/c he is familiar with our scheme, but I hate to see chris clemons go. He will be a stud somewhere else unless we pick him back up when he is healthy. I kinda feel like Spurrier is coaching this team b/c were signing anybody right now or trading away even though we got something for nothing. Is our team desperate for depth. C'mon i wanna hear what you guys think.

Cutting Clemons surprises me. He was the only pure speed rusher the Skins had. If it were closer to the season, I could understand the dilemma -- to place him on injured reserve would have meant losing him for the year, even though he'd have been ready in 6 weeks. But NFL roster rules don't permit teams to simply add another player to replace the injured guy while he's out.

Yet another reason why the NFL really needs to revise the stringent 53-man roster rule.

But again, the rules don't apply in preseason. Couldn't they have waited a bit to see how the competition pans out? Maybe they're impressed enough with McCune.

I don't know. Linebackers looked stocked, even without Clemons. Jimmy Williams would have looked really good right about now. Instead, we're pinning our hopes on Mike Rumph, The Ade, and Kenny Wright.

Scary. Let's hope this "procedure" for Springs settles the issue for him once and for all.

The timing isn't good. Folau isn't an upgrade to the other veteran FA Ols we picked up earlier this year. Holdman is holding up. What gives? Clemons was not a cog in this defense. Why are we working out so many RBs? Manuel White Jr. made plays against CIN in garbage time. What else do we need?

There's not much out there as far as O-linemen go. Folau has to be better then the current reserves.

How did we make it throughout the season last year? OK. I'm calm. a lot of these guys aren't going to make the final cut. And that includes veterans alike.

But, he sat out all of last year. Would we be better signing Ray Brown or the "big guy" from NFL Network?

Beem, I'm with you, our backup O-line looked horrible the other night. I mean after Portis' 8 yard run we had about 30 yards on the ground the rest of the night. Folau is an experienced guy and I bet after watching the film, that Joe Bugle was disgusted with what he saw. The Skins really need to find 2 or 3 solid guys who can play O-line without a serious drop off in talent. I don't think they have that right now.
