Let's talk beer

I am about to enter my second year in college, so in this field I may seem a bit immature, but I do have some beer knowledge. Just wanted to start this thread off by appreciating the greatness of beer. I love beer, much better than any liqour any day. I love trying new beer, and different kinds, and the department im mainly lagging in is lagers. But I have all next year to catch up. I figure with all the drunk talk, we talk bout our favorite beers, and beer in general. My favorite as of now, are Blue Moon. That stuff is very smooth, and try it with an orange slice, and its golden. I mean you cant really go wrong with lime and a corona, or a heineken either.

I just tried some Blue Moon the other day and it wasn't bad, but give me a budweiser or a smooth lager if I can't have a margarita, screwdriver, or just plain tequilla or vodka.

I don't get the beer thing. The only thing it tastes better than is coffee. Which I don't get either. Give me a decent cocktail any day. Something that doesn't taste like rhino pee. Nothing flowery but something that doesn't require a strong will to actually swallow.

i think it has alot to do with some bad liquor experience(see my NYC drunk story in the drunk story thread), and I honestly could not drink liqour for months. Just the thought severely disgusted me. I hated beer at the time, but had to make the switch so atleast i was drinking something. Learned to love shitty light beer, which is like water for me now, and now have started to appreciate the better beers in the world.

Re: Let's talk beer

In college you sort of have to learn to love beer (and 40s of course) because your budget really won't cover many other "refreshments". I'll have the occassional beer but it's not my alcohol of choice, usually a liquor guy.

You know what would be one of life's great ironies. Hooskins gets busted for underage drinking one day and the cop who busts him is....mheisig!

By the way, I wonder if mheisig is learning to make cool sounds like that dude from Police Academy

It's kind crazy cause beer and manliness are joined at the hip and if you don't like beer it's like you failed the "man test."

Re: Let's talk beer

It took me awhile to really like beer, but no I love it. We have a little pub near my house with a huge beer menu and I always try to get something different when I go. I also like many different types of beer, like some people like different wines I guess.
I like Corona, but it's kind of watery. Dos Equis is one of my favorites. So is Yuengling. I have to get the Sam Adams holiday pack every winter, I like the variety. I've had Blue Moon but I've never liked it, I feel like it's too fruity and sweet. I really hate cheap beer, that stuff gives me headaches, but I will drink Bud Light when at a bar, mainly because I'm cheap. I also really like Amestle (sp?) Light, it's good because you can drink a ton and not tget too hammered.
But of course, the top of the line is Guiness, I could drink that all day long and be very fat and happy.

Lately though I've been getting bad headaches from beer for some reason so I've started drinking more whiskey and rum. Tequila is also good, but I hate vodka.

Re: Let's talk beer

I LOVE beer. I can go on and on about it. I actually brew my own on occasion. I have a beer snob's mentality with beer, but I'll never turn my nose up at my beer-drinking brethren. Because hey, when you're with your buddies at the bar, it doesn't matter what kind of beer you're drinking, as long as you're having a beer together.

I like beers with a lot of flavor and character, can't stand light beers. The beer either needs to be very rich in malt flavor (like a porter) or very hoppy like a pale ale. I can't do Bud, Miller, or Coors (all are too bland for my tastes).

My favorite macrobrews:
Sam Adams
Sam Adams Winter Lager
Sam Adams Oktoberfest
Urquell
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Newcastle Brown Ale
Bass Ale
Yuengling Black & Tan
Moosehead

But my absolute favorite beers are made by Microbreweries. I'm a Philadelphia native, so if you're in that area, these are some GREAT ones to try:

Victory's Golden Monkey - this is a Belgian style "tripel" ale. Tripel ales are a rich golden color with a lot of flavor, but very smooth. They include some spices. It's a real strong beer, 9.5% by volume. Tremendous.

Victory's Hop Devil Ale - if you like a hoppy flavor, holy crap is this the one for you. Those who don't like hops describe hoppy beer as very bitter. Those who love hops describe hoppy beer has having a lot of bite. The flavor is very very strong. If you like pale ales (like Harpoon, Sierra Nevada, etc.) you'll love this.

Victory's Prima Pils - this is the best pilsner beer I've ever had. Pilsners are a smooth lager with a distinct hop flavor. They go down easy. Miller Lite is an example of a Pilsner, though it's obviously very watery since it's a light. This one by Victory has big-time smoothness, it's very drinkable. But the flavor is still full bodied and sharp. That's a tough combination to get together.

Flying Fish's HopFish India Pale Ale - very hoppy and crisp.

Flying Fish's Belgian Abbey Dubbel - One of the maltiest beers I can find (outside of Guiness which can be a bit too heavy in the gut at times). Smooth as the dickens, the caramel and chocolate malts provide a nice undertone, but don't overpower the beer. It's pretty rich. This is a great one on cold days (like around Thanksgiving).

Re: Let's talk beer

I prefer beer, but I do love a good strong cocktail. I don't like it straight that well, mainly because it's a first-class ticket to puking later if I drink it straight. I love me some straight up rum and coke mixed with some GOOD rum, like Captain Morgan's Private Stock. Or I'll Snoop-Dogg it and drink some Gin and Juice. In general, I drink Bud Light as my "get f-ed up" beer of choice, but lately owning a house I've only been able to afford Keystone. When I got the money though, Corona, Labatt, Molsen, Magic Hat #9, Guiness.

All a GOOD decision.

I'm a huge fan of the IPAs myself. That one is particular is good. We have that one tap at this pub here. NOTHING is better than coming out of the tap. I'm not a big fan of porters, something about the darkness of it just tastes bad. But I'm not a coffee drinker either, so go figure.
