Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

Just for reference, the last few years Al Saunder's RBs have produced the following stats:

2005: Johnson 336-1750-20, Holmes 119-451-6
2004: Holmes 196-892-14, Johnson 120-581-9
2003: Holmes 320-1420-27
2002: Holmes 313-1615-21

Drool away.

Re: Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

i have been thinking about that since we got saunders here. it is a offense that enables the rbs to rack up crazy yards and allows the qbs to pass for 3000 yards also. just imagine saunders did not have the athletes we got here in kc. the only question is the qb can brunell maintain the consistency that saunders qbs have. or can jason campbell prove his worthy of a number one pick.

I hope it's higher than 1700yrds, but I feel like it could take a year or two in this new offense before Portis puts up a 2000+yrd season.

Brunell vs. Green is kind of a toss up, but our receiving corps is definitely better than in KC. I would not, however, say that KC doesn't have the athletes we do - Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson certainly benefited from Saunders' system, but both are/were tremendous athletes.

We may never know what Holmes could have accomplished if he had played a full career, and Johnson is already on pace to set some absurd records. I'd say KC had two of the best RBs in the league for a number of years now.

I'm not holding my breath for that. Aren't there only 4 RBs in the history of the NFL to post a 2000+ yard season?

I see the offense being potent as a whole, but the ball will get spread around. Portis will have 1700+, but the receivers will get a share of those yards too.

Re: Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

I'm guessing somewhere around 1500, but I think he'll have less carries than last year but a higher yards per carry.

Portis is a beast and a workhorse, but as we saw at the end of last year, riding him game after game wears him out eventually. He's just not the kind of back you can give 25+ carries a game to week after week and expect him to stay healthy in the long run.

I think we'll see heavy doses of Betts at times this year to keep CP fresh.

Re: Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

Maybe the more important question is, how many awesome blocks are we going to see from CP this year?

I swear I like watching that guy block almost as much as watching him run.

Re: Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

I don't know Saunder's thoughts on spelling Portis, but I liked the way Gibbs did it last year with Portis basically running 2-3 series and then Betts coming in for a series, then back to Portis. I know this was not the case every game, but it sort seem to work that way. I don't see a 2000 yard season for Portis, because you do have Betts and Rock out there to help. I voted the 1400-1700 range.

I agree. If you compare CP to some of the great workhorse backs in recent years (LT, Alexander, Holmes), he's actually one of the taller ones at 5'11, but also lighter at 213 or so. These workhorse backs generally got in the 350 carry range during their peaks.

Like Matty said, CP doesn't seem to be able to handle that. I don't know if it's a conditioning thing or a size/weight thing. It certainly isn't a heart issue - dude's got enough heart and passion for 3 RBs.

In order to break 2000 or even 1700, you need a LOT of carries or a YPC that is just phenominal.

I'm guessing he'll get close to 1400 yards but not quite. His ypc will go up, and he'll get his share of scores. I see more trick plays in the offense this year. I see a lot of screens and intermediate completions, some of which will be broken for scores. I see more defensive scoring this year as well. I see less close games this year, where Portis is pulled for the fourth quarter and Betts gets the majority of carries in mop-ups.

guessing anywhere from 1400-1600 range. just like everyone else, the carries need to go done because as much as i love clinton, like matty said he was physically getting worn out at the end of the season. and matty, who sponsored this poll?

I think Portis is gonna be runnin the ball against nickel and dime defenses alot. He will have alot of yac yards.

+1

I think you will see CP's rushing total remain in the 1500-1600 yard range, on fewer carries, plus I think you'll see him catch more balls out of the backfield. He not quite Faulk, but he has underrated pass catching ability that I think Saunders will try to exploit that out of two back sets.

CP is not a 3-yards and cloud of dust type runner that you can pound for 400 carries. It seems that he just needs to get past the first block and he's "gonnagetcha" at least 6-7 yards. I think you'll see a lot less 50-gut style between the tackles stuff this year, and a lot more backfield screen with R.Thomas, pulling behind Fauria off the right IMHO.

Re: Clinton Portis rushing total 2006

Rushing = 1700-2000

All-purpose yards (including passing and receiving) = 2000+

I wonder if Portis will still run the HB pass with Randel El now on the team. We could let BOTH of them have passing plays in the playbook. That would kill some teams. I suggest we wait for the Dallas game to unveil the trickery though.
