Tyler Jones in...so what does it mean for Hall?

Redskins | Jones to join team at offseason workouts Tuesday; will start bid for job
Fri, 19 May 2006 19:34:05 -0700
Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins PK Tyler Jones, now kicking in NFL Europe, is expected to join the Redskins for their offseason workouts Tuesday, May 23. Although the odds of making the team appear slim, Jones is eager for a chance to push PK John Hall for the starting job. "I had a pretty good season and I was able to get a lot of good work in and good experience under my belt," Jones said from Amsterdam. Jones has connected on 9 of 12 field goals in NFL Europe and has been perfect on extra points. Jones has excelled on kickoffs, helping Hamburg to have the second-best kickoff coverage in NFL Europe. Kickoffs are of particular importance to the Redskins; head coach Joe Gibbs has said it is unlikely Hall will handle those duties this season.

Probably nothing, but Hall hasn't been impressive since he got here. I'm gonna set the odds of Jones winning the job at 4-1. Thoughts?

Yea Hall was a highly regarded kicker when he came here but totally fell apart with the quad injuries. Tyler Jones should have a legit shot at the roster because john hall flat out can't do the job.

Unless the punter handles it, as happens on some other teams.

Hall hasn't had complete seasons his past two years, but he has kicked accurately when asked to do so. He's 14-14 inside 40 yards. The problem is his salary cap figure (just under $2 million a year for the next two) and his durability don't match up.

This is the product of having a decent team again. People are forgetting what it is like to actually have BAD players. Hall hasn't been terrible. He has been slightly above average. Anyone care to recall what our kickers were like before Hall? Yeah they sucked hard. I doubt this guy is anything but fodder/maybe kickoff specialist.

Ackers????

Hall was overated when we signed him, he had a big leg but wasen't a model of consistancy or clutch kicking, now he can't stay on the field.

As far as I am concerned if a kicker can't keep his legs in proper shape to perform then dump him, time to give someone else a shot early, it's better than having to go to him late considering Halls past injury problems and the fact that he can't kick off anymore.

Since Lohmiller, Hall is the best kicker we have had. Ackers obviously wasn't as good as he is now since we obviously didn't keep him. Of course that was a big mistake but every other kicker since Lohmiller(oh about 35 of 'em) has sucked. Hell we have lost probably 16 games because of kicking in the last 15 years. And I do think it is time to move on from Hall. I simply don't like people acting like he is/has been terrible. Just look at what we have had. We have a lot of people calling out guys on our team lately around here that are far better players than we have had in years. People throwing Rabach under the bus is a prime example. First way are people on him? and second Tell who we have had who was better recently.

Re: Tyler Jones in...so what does it mean for Hall?

I honestly think we are better off holding two kickers on the roster and having Hall handle exclusivley kickoff or feild goal duties. The only reason I mention him handling only kickoffs, is because he is a very "tough guy" for a kicker and made a big play for us at Seattle by throwing around his body.

I hope Jones can either push hall, or overtake the feild goal duties, as that is somthing I'd like to see improved this year.

Honestly, outside of his feild goals against the Jets in 03' and at Tampa Bay last season, he really hasent made any "clutch" winning kicks for us. Hell Novack came in and nailed a 37 yrd kick vs Seattle to send us home. I think it's a position we can improve.

Hall's ability to stay healthly is the only concern.

Re: Tyler Jones in...so what does it mean for Hall?

The only thing that gets my attention is the fact that the guy can kick off well. I hate seeing kickoffs constantly get fielded from the 15 yard line.

Kickoffs have been a big problem. Hall cannot get the ball to the endzone. That puts a lot of pressure on the coverage team when the opponents start the runback on the 15 yardline everytime. Hall has been a decent placekicker, but his kickoffs SUCK.
