UDFA list from skins.com--wonder if any will make it?
Here's the list from skins.com. Another LB from Princeton--we like them smart guys!
Redskins Add 7 More Undrafted Rookies By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com May 9, 2006 The Redskins have agreed to terms with seven undrafted rookies coming out of the just-concluded three-day Rookie Camp, the team announced on Tuesday. Justin Stull The team has also released linebacker Nick McNeil, linebacker Jashon Sykes, defensive end Sean Guthrie and cornerback/wide receiver LaShaun Ward. The list of newcomers includes linebacker Justin Stull, who played college ball at Princeton, and wide receiver Mike Espy, whose father (also named Mike) is a former U.S. congressman and agriculture secretary. Here's the complete list, with thumbnail descriptions: # Mike Espy, WR, Mississippi Espy, 5-11 and 195-pounds, was a contributor all four seasons at Ole Miss, playing in 48 games and starting five. Last year, he caught 52 passes for 543 yards and three touchdowns. He also served as a punt and kickoff return specialist. # John Eubanks, CB, Southern Mississippi Eubanks, 5-10 and 173 pounds, was a three-year starter and All-Conference special teams selection at Southern Mississippi. As a kick return specialist last season, he averaged 24.2 yards per return. At cornerback, he logged 31 tackles and four interceptions and one forced fumble. # Vaka Manupuna, DT, Colorado Manupuna, 6-0 and 290 pounds, started the past two seasons and earned all-Big 12 Conference honors as a senior. He is regarded as a hard-working, three-technique lineman. Last year, he posted 52 tackles (28 solo) and four tackles for a loss. # Chris Mineo, DT, UTEP Mineo, 6-1 and 295 pounds, sustained an ankle injury during his senior season which may have kept him off draft boards. In limited action, he posted 20 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and six sacks last year for the Miners. As a junior, he recorded 52 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss and eight sacks. # Chris Pino, OT, San Diego State Pino, 6-4 and 315 pounds, joins college teammate Spencer Harvey, also an undrafted rookie, on the Redskins' roster. Pino played left tackle for the Aztecs. He has battled weight issues in the past, but he has surprising mobility for his size. # Justin Stull, LB, Princeton For the second year in a row, the Redskins signed an undrafted rookie linebacker out of Princeton. Last offseason, it was Zak Keasey who earned a spot on the Redskins' roster. (Keasey is currently on the San Francisco 49ers' off-season roster.) Stull, 6-1 and 235 pounds, served as Princeton's co-captain last season. He recorded 86 tackles (43 solo), four sacks and two forced fumbles. # Joe Sykes, DE, Southern University Sykes is a 6-2, 266-pound defensive end who may be somewhat raw, but he has the size and long arms to fit in to a classic 4-3 alignment. As a senior at Southern, he played in nine games and recorded 53 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss and nine sacks. The roster adjustments come two days after the Redskins completed their three-day Rookie Camp. Team officials feel they uncovered some young, promising talent at the camp. At linebacker, undrafted rookies Spencer Havner and Stull will join draft picks Roger "Rocky" McIntosh and Kevin Simon. The four additions led to a log-jam at linebacker, so the team opted to release both McNeil and Sykes. The seven new additions bring the number of 2006 undrafted rookies on the roster to 15. On May 1, the team agreed to terms with defensive tackle Manaia Brown, wide receiver Derrick Fenner, offensive lineman Jasper Harvey, cornerback Chris Hawkins, linebacker Spencer Harvey, punter David Lonie, cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha and tight end Buck Ortega.

I am guessing many of these guys have size/speed issues. SO did Marshall and I believe Pierce was pegged as too small also but he put on some bulk. They'll find some nice production out out of 2 or 3 of these guys I bet in coming years.

havner and chijioke will make the final roster... lumsden might make the roster or practice squad... hawkins has a longer shot, though it'd be possible for him too.

I'm a big fan of the Eubanks signing. I have watched alot of Southern Miss and he was a standout for their D. He is undersized but reminds me alot of Smoot but probably not as tough overall. He could give us some nice depth at CB maybe on the practice squad. Also could do some special teams work.

Re: UDFA's--wonder if any will make it?
What does it mean when they say that we have signed these players? Did they get a contract to try and make the team? A contract of maybe a year and we will cut some if not all of them? I just don't get the term of signing them when most will not make the team.

You have to sign them to get them into camp. Legal issues like injuries and such. Only the top 50 or so players count against the salary cap. I think Havner will make the team.

Re: UDFA's--wonder if any will make it?
The thing with UFA's is that a lot of them go onto be successful in the NFL, but rarley do they latch on with their initial teams. I think its a learning time for them of some sorts, where they can go in and see how things are run, and mirror their workouts and training to that, so when they try out with teams in the future, they will have a better chance of latching on. That being said, I dont know that anyone outside of the kid from Miami have a shot of making the team. The only reason I say that is cause he is from Miami and Tight End is still a questionable position if you ask me.

Re: UDFA's--wonder if any will make it?
only the top 51 count against the cap.
generally all these guys sign 2 year deals with the team (no gauranteed money) and try their best to make the roster. That way if someone comes out of nowhere (like havner might) the team has some protection for taking a chance on the player and time to extend or work a new deal. Otherwise UDFA's would be a bit pointless, since they'd just leave for money the second they showed they could play, reducing any incentive to bother with them. |
