Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Montana wanted a guaranteed appearance fee of $100,000, instead of the package the NFL had in mind for the entire class of MVPs. The league reportedly was providing airfare, accommodations, two tickets to the game, $1,000 for incidentals while in Detroit and the use of a rental car.

Bradshaw's agent told reporters that his guy wanted to spend Super Bowl Sunday with his family, that it had nothing to do with the coin. Either way, it's pretty weak.

Montana, meanwhile, may have had other reasons for not showing up. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News speculated that it could have been Steve Young's presence that kept Montana from showing up.

I can't really blame these guys for not wanting to be there. The musical performances were enough to scare anyone.

I have no problem with these guys skipping this. The NFL makes a ton of money off these guys (I doubt TB is a millionaire many times over from what he made playing football) and all they would do is give them $1000 for food (The other stuff didnt cost the NFL a penny due to contractural arrangements with the companies providing the service I'm sure). I think the NFL could have thrown a bigger bone to the guys that made their league what it is, the #1 sports league in the world.

I can see Bradshaw wanting to enjoy the SuperBowl at home with family and friends, it was his team playing in it so he probably really wanted to see how it went and didnt want to split everyone up.

I would understand asking for a bit more because these guys do have other things they could be doing...however, Montana's 100k is a bit steep.

As far as TB goes, it's like his 1st weekend off since July, and you can't blame the guy for wanting to spend time with his family.

The article posits that Bradshaw is pissed at Pittsburgh fans for booing him at the end of his career, but, like Bohnzie said, if the man wants family time, then give him family time.

I really don't have a problem with this, they both had their reasons. I might not agree with Montana thinking he's worth 100k for just showing up but hey whatever.

TB and Pittsburgh kissed and made up about 2 years ago. Thats no longer an issue.

I just heard on TK's show that the NFL initially promised these guys $1000 per day and then switched to $1000 total. Also the NFL ended up not delivering on the rental cars.

It is stupid of JIM MASHEK to write how sad it is that some these players can barely walk and then say they owe it to the fans to be there. These former players do not owe us anything.

Montana is outted as a greedy selfish prick.
Bradshaw would have been hailed by the new/current Steelers fan base. Whatever he wants to do he has a right. As for the NFL package, seems like a great trade for showing up to be honored at SB XL.

well Terry was on Jay Leno the very next night so i don't know how he can spend time there and not at the super bowl. Montana asking for 100,000 is rediculous.

YO', correct! This is a free country and you can do what you want. If your a celeb, your actions may come with public backlash (ask the Dixie chicks).
Joe IS the man and from PA. Terry should feel allegiance to HIS team. I think it is a sad testimony to the general state of things, and particularly sports, that they think this is not the case. As TG stated, this is an important sports moment, and Joes kid will have MANY other Games for him to attend. Atheletes in general, should realize where they would be without, and the gratitude they should perhaps feel towards Pro sports. If not, "Can I supersize that for you today, sir "?

Shapiro pointed out that Joe is known for being slightly greedy. I tend to agree with him that these guys should have a little more respect for the league that made them famous. Also both being from or playing in Pennn I am a little diappointed they didn't feel more obligated. That said the $1000 is an insult really. I guess it is all a wash.
