Re: Another Pick In The 3rd Round?

Apparently the formula for determining what, if any, compensatory draft picks each club shall receive is not available to the public. Section 10 of Article XVI of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement simply states, "The rules and procedures regarding Compensatory Draft Selections ... shall be as agreed upon by the NFL and the NFLPA." According to a 2004 article written by ESPN's John Clayton, "The NFL Management Council determines the number and value of the compensatory picks, and it guards the secrecy of its compensatory formula like Coke guards its secret recipe. This much is known: The NFL formula is based on salary, playing time, postseason awards and the net of free agents lost versus free agents signed."

So we likely will not know what, if any, compensatory draft selections we will get until after the Annual Meeting at the end of this month. A 3rd rounder would certainly be nice though.

True, but the guy whose article I linked to seems to have a pretty good track record of predicting who is getting picks. Not perfect, but certainly seems very reliable

Re: Another Pick In The 3rd Round?

this guy has an EXTREMELY good track record. he's been dead on for the skins the last two years (which are the only two years i've checked), so i'd place some weight on his opinion.

Yeah, I read the article after it was posted on a thread on ES. The guy certainly seems to know what he is talking about, but I guess I just won't believe we will get an extra 3rd rounder until the NFL announces the compensatory draft pick awards.

its FA signed, FA's lost, contract values, etc

a bunch of nfl guys get in a dark room and figure it out, so it's not an exact science, but they do seem to follow guidelines fairly closely.

I wonder if the Redskins have the same sense (or maybe they already know) as this guy of what they're getting and with an extra 3rd round maybe that's another reason why they've been patient in free agency. Or if they get that extra 3rd round pick they can use their own as part of a trade...Chad Johnson?

If we get an extra 3rd rounder, we should be able to muster 3 immediate or future starters out of the draft. Also, our approach to free agency would certainly make more sense if we do get the pick.

I believe the fact that Smoot was cut made him ineligible in the calculation. I KNOW he isn't included in Minnesota's calculations because he was cut and did not become a true UFA due to an expiring contract.

Re: Another Pick In The 3rd Round?

I had no idea this was a mathematical equation. I thought it was subjective.

Well, good for us!

Re: Another Pick In The 3rd Round?

Little known fact. Tom Brady was not only a 6th round pick, but he was a 6th round compensatory pick. So these picks can definitely go a long way

Re: Another Pick In The 3rd Round?

After reading this through, it appears that he's saying the acquisition of Fletcher = the loss of Duckett. I question whether we could actually get 2 7th rnd. picks for Wright & Holdman given their playing time. Holdman was on IR all year.

the 3rd round pick would be sweet! If we got even 1 7th rounder that would just be gravy. If we got 2 I'd be really surprised, but very happy. Given our recent success w/undrafted free agents, I like the chances of a 7th rounder making the team.
