Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Reid is a pretty damn QB friendly coach/system too. In terms of numbers I think Smith can pick right up where Kirk left off. Probably lower turnovers and better rushing numbers though.

When the dust settles we basically made a lateral move in terms of player production and at less money, money that can hopefully go towards a guy like Z. Brown. There was never going to be a nice clean ending to the Cousins drama that we could all agree on. Yes the team F'd it up and could/should have signed him 2 years ago. But I also remember plenty of folks comparing him to the likes of Rex Grossman and saying he wasn't worthy of a long term deal. I'm guessing some of those same people are the ones all up in arms now. It wasn't that long ago some thought RGIII got a raw deal when Gruden made the switch. I like the fact the QB drama is now settled, likely for the next 3 years at least. In the meantime we can draft and develop someone and we didn't choke out the cap in the process. |

Well, let's put it this way: 1) I love having Alex Smith here. Solid starter that can take us all the way with the team around him. Or at the very least win games while we develop a prospect (which we could draft this year, next year or the year after that). 2) But I do think the Chiefs "won" that trade, if I'm a Chiefs fan I'm thinking: -We have our QB of the future -We freed 17M in cap room, and Smith was only here for one more year anyway -We got a rising young corner... And a 3rd, we'll take that! So, not sure I LOVE the trade, but I do love that we solved our QB situation at a reasonable price and can move on!

However, that being said, nothing can diminish the fact that the front office is replacing a 29-year old starting QB with a career passer rating of 93.7 with a 33-year old QB with a career passer rating of 87.4. They surrendered a very talented CB and a 3rd round pick as well. All it did for the Chiefs was give them 17 million more in cap room and make their defense better. The irony of the deal is they are paying the 33-year old today, what they could have signed the 29-year old for 2 years ago. |

Had we offered KC this contract 2 years most of us would have gone ballistic. And we should have, KC was nowhere near earning this kind of contract 2 years ago. |

Just saying, Smith got guaranteed money from Washington at around 71 million over 4 years. What makes more sense? 71 million guaranteed (in 2015) for a 20-something who has surpassed 4,000 yards each season as a starter? Or 71 million guaranteed for a 34 year old starter who has surpassed 4,000 yards only once in 12 years? Cousins is your franchise leader in passing yards in a single season. If you check the passing leaders by year for the Redskins history, you will see that 3 of the top 5 seasons (1,2 and 4) are held by Cousins. How does the team NOT extend this guy? |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
We didn't get worse, which would have been the case with probably any other QB solution.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
If Colt McCoy could do the same things as Alex Smith he'd be doing it and not riding the pine as a career backup. Please stop bringing up Colt, it's just not a realistic argument.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
What pisses me off is that you don’t trade your second best CB and a 3rd round pick for a 33 year old QB on the downside of his career and give him lots of money. Iwould have offered 3rd and that’s it. Management sucks!!

However, Smith is a huge upgrade over Colt McCoy. That is not a debate.
