re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)

The problem isn't the 3-4. The problem is reserves not being able to play up to the level of injured starters. Jarvis Jenkins hasn't done squat in replacing Adam Carriker and while Rob Jackson and Chris Wilson are good backups, neither has generated the pass rush of Orakpo. Cofield and Bowen have played well. Kerrigan, Fletcher, and Riley have also played well. But Hall, Wilson, Madieu Williams, and Doughty have played poorly.

I don't think you can fire Haslett. While he's coordinates the defense, he isn't responsible for schooling the defensive backs. That falls on Raheem Morris and if the defensive backfield is under performing, then it falls on the secondary coach and not the defensive coordinator.

I'm fine with staying in the 3-4, but let's get some players that fit in the system. I know he's a good player, but Cofield is not a 3-4 NT. We also need ILBs that can do a better job at covering TEs. The thing that sucks is that these areas are not even our biggest needs on D (secondary). Still, personnel-wise we haven't done a good job at bringing the right players for this system.

I like Cofield, but also wish we had a true 3-4 NT type, like Casey Hampton.

I pointed this out before but right now we don't really have 4-3 personnel, mainly due to the fact that we're short on traditional linebackers.

I mean lets see.

OLB - Perry Riley (Coverage liability)
MLB - Fletcher
OLB - Orakpo

LDE - Carriker
DT - Bowen
DT - Cofield
RDE - Kerrigan

Ironically we have great depth on the defensive line, so much that it would be hard to give our best players up front snaps while on the back end we have an average at best LB corps. Then again that could be rectified with one offseason so maybe a switch is in the cards but theres no doubt about the fact that this team has made the transition to the 3-4.

It looks like Ron Rivera will be getting the boot in Carolina, I remember liking him as a D coordinator. What was his specialty (3-4 vs 4-3) and what about him in the offseason.

Its a combination of not great coaching and severely lacking talent. There is only so much I could see being done with the players we currently have and the injuries. Fresh start on D next year seems like the best plan to me.

This defense would look worlds different with Orakpo, Carriker, Tanard jackson, and Merriweather. but I don't think Haslett will survive till next year without a massive turnaround.

Rivera is a prick for lack of a better term.

06:54 AM ET 09.13 | Rex Grossman, the NFL's favorite pinata took another beating off of it after San Diego linebacker Matt Wilhelm told a California newspaper that Chargers linebackers coach Ron Rivera advised his players they could rattle Grossman because he was "a mental midget."
But to answer your question, both. He was the DCoordinator for the Bears from 04 to 06 then he went to the Chargers originally as a LB coach specifically to get 3-4 experience and boost his chances of getting a HC job. He eventually went on to be the Chargers D-Coordintor from 08-10 before getting his current gig with Carolina.

Why not just fire all the coaches.

No way do we have a 4-3 personal. Bowen is NOT a DT. Orakpo is NOT a 4-3 linebacker. Those 2 are wayyyyyy outta position.

A prick is what the Redskins need, not a Boy Scout.

Riley is a bigger coverage liability than Orakpo? I don't think so.
