I suppose I'm being a little too critical of Kelly because I had high expectations of him. When Art Monk couldn't compete in the 1982 playoffs because of a broken toe, that was a legitimate injury. Kelly had his chances. If he really wanted to push at it, he could have battled through whatever injury he had. But as I said in my earlier post, Kelly had no testicular fortitude. He had no fight in him whatsoever. The fact that he is still a free agent shows the guy has nothing but quit in him.

Or maybe teams don't want to take a risk for an unproven talent with a big medical risk?

From all accounts Kelly worked hard, he just had a bum knee. Some injuries you can't just "battle through".

Right on, Matty. It isn't MK's fault that we drafted him, it isn't his fault his knees suck, for all we really know he has done all he could have to play in the NFL. So why beat up a guy for injuries beyond his control?

And the "he should have played through the pain" comment is just stupid.

I have a habit of comparing NFL players of today to NFL players of 30 and 40 years ago. Vince Lombardi expected his players to play with injuries. By all accounts, I guess today's players are silver spoon fed the notion that if they are injured they should take half the season off and that's not how it was in the 1960s and 1970s.

And for your information, I didn't use the words "play through the pain." I actually said Kelly should have tried to at least "battle through his injury" which is not a far fetched notion at all because some players do it all the time even in today's NFL. I guess collectively they don't make football players the way they used to.

You're missing a huge point...which is the rules say he can't come back. The team had to make a decision to put him on IR because he was going to miss enough time that they had to have another active player on the roster. He could have and wanted to come back in October but NFL rules don't allow that. Back in the day that was allowed

Well, I guess Kelly liked having his knees intact :x. I can sympathize with the dude. Knee injuries are awful and some people can't shake em off.

Those same NFL players 30-40 years ago have/are suing the NFL for conditions they developed by playing through their injuries.

I think it's kind of petty that you say "newer" players are spoon-fed the notion that if they are injured they should take half the season off. If it's the team that is doing the spoon feeding than they are just protecting their investments.

There are a lot of players from years ago who are battling through horrible health issues due to the conditions in which they played, such as being asked to play through injuries. I think it is a bit naive to say that today's players are being silver spoon fed anything. Many players and teams are being more careful in terms of making decisions of when an injured player should return, given that there is usually a lot of money at stake in the sport.

And honestly in the end, NO ONE benefits from having a player play through injury. Case in point, watching a hobbled up Big Ben playing in the playoffs.

So then how do explain, for just one example, the fact that Boyd Dowler, a WR who played for Lombardi's Packers, missed a Super Bowl (the biggest game of the year) due to injury?

Even Lombardi's players could be too injured to play.

Injuries happen. What I'm saying is some injuries are not as bad as other injuries and in today's NFL players are having their hearts massaged for not playing even after sustaining lesser injuries. A torn ACL or anything broken should always be seen as a serious injury that would have any player incapable of playing. With Malcolm Kelly though, the brother was just a large disappointment in conjunction with his injuries. The type of injury that he seemingly can't come back from, other players have played with that kind of injury before.

I think Kelly was a disappointment because of his injuries. Outside of Zorn's comments during Thomas and Kelly's rookie year about both of them not being in shape, I don't think I've seen or read anything about Kelly not putting the effort to play. In the end, a wide receiver with recurring knee problems is not going to work out. Especially one who misses a lot of practice time and games in their first year due to these injuries.

I really don't care much for Kelly, but I just don't see how you can blame him for having bad knees. The bigger disappointment was our stupid FO who took a player who was known to have injury problems. Don't forget that the team, including Shanahan, gave Kelly a lot of time to return and show that he's healthy. If he wasn't putting much of an effort, he would or if his injury wasn't "that big of a deal" he would have been long gone.

I realized that I misquoted you as soon as I posted. Sorry.

But the notion is the same, neither of us can know whether he could have "battled through his injury" though. I just chose to believe that, all things considered, MK would have played had he been able to since a very lucrative career was on the line...

I agree wholeheartedly. To spend a 2nd rounder on a WR with bum knees was just stupid. Kinda like spending a 3rd round pick on Burfict. Great to risk a 5th rounder or less, 3rd round or higher just doesn't make sense. So glad VC is gone, and professionals are in charge.

In the 2nd round of the 2008 NFL draft, the Redskins could have had either Jordy Nelson or DeSean Jackson. Fred Davis was a legitimate pick. But as it turns out, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were wasted picks. Just think of how different things would have been had the Redskins took Eddie Royal, DeSean Jackson, or Jordy Nelson with one of those draft picks. Mario Manningham was also available after the Redskins took Kelly and Thomas in 2008. Vinny Cerratto couldn't draft worth a damn.
