It would be officially official on March 13th. But for all intents and purposes it can happen now

Well for all intents and purposes if a deal did get done today wouldn't it just be a handshake deal, with nothing to bind it until the paperwork did get completed? That's not to say both sides would renege on the deal but all they'd have is their word that the deal got done until the paperwork can be submitted to the league office.

Well, they can still make deals. They usually work out. Infact, never heard of a team backing out. I hope they do make a deal, because the speculation is killing me.

Now what happens if Cleveland is bluffing and don't have plans to draft RGIII? Not trying to be negative, but what if that is the case.

it killing me too, that being said, say a handshake deal gets done and later on before its official a team blows them out of the water with an offer, i doubt the redskins feelings are in their thoughts before they accept it. i hope this doesnt happen. thatd be dirty

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

^^ the bears pretty much stalled on a deal to their benefit. I always love when someone makes an error that just so happens to be in their favor.

If I were the skins, I'd negotiate hard with the rams. If they want us to agree to a deal in the next 48 hours, I would require them to drop the toss in pick they are probably asking for and hoping to get (3rd or 5th next year, cherry on top for them pick).

Either way, id be pretty hesitant to give up the 6th overall, our high 2nd and 3rd rounder plus picks next year to move up 4 spots. Id offer the 6th overall, this years 3rd and 4th plus next years 2nd.

This years 6th overall, plus 2nd and 3rd should be enough imo. The browns are doing it right by not giving in and offering both their 1st round picks.

I think both sides could "unofficially" announce that a deal is in place.

At that point it would be highly unlikely that one side would back out.

It makes a lot of sense because as opposed to most years when draft picks grow in value as the draft approaches, free agency can reduce the true number of suitors for RGIII depending on where Manning and Flynn end up. Clayton also said the Dolphins and Seahawks aren't realistically in it so it will come down to us and Cleveland.

Throw in the post-Combine weekend speculation that the Browns are unwilling to part with both #1 picks and that they are planning to go hard after Flynn the cards are laying out for a RGIII-Redskins marriage at some point soon.

From our standpoint, it would also be beneficial to make the move prior to free agency because we'd then know where we need to focus our resources. We can address WR, G and CB via free agency if we know the QB position will be addressed with the #2 pick.
I like the Browns thought process. They already have McCoy and adding Flynn gives them competition and 2 chances to hit at the QB position while preserving all their picks. If one or both work out and they make good on their picks, they could be sitting pretty.

The only way that I see a handshake deal failing is your scenario where a team comes out of nowhere with a substantially higher offer. Hopefully we've planned for that contingency by saying, "Call us before you make any other deal so that we might match it."

So we could actually get an announcement before march 13th? That sure would be exciting!

I find it very hard to believe that an NFL team would re-neg on a handshake deal. That would make it very difficult for the rest of the league to ever deal with those executives & team in the future. Sounds almost like a career suicide move. If they do a handshake deal then it's done...

I can't remember when a team has backed out, but the possibility always exists that maybe a team did and nobody knew anything about it because it was kept on the d/l.

Either way if they do make a deal before then I would expect it to go down, the only way I don't see this happening is if right at the last minute before the paperwork gets faxed the Rams decide they want more lol.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

NFL.com, Espn.com, profootballtalk.com, the Bleacher Report, all have been talking about the Redskins trading up and the Rams trading back. Within the top six picks, who are they only teams that will make a play for drafting a QB? Washington and Cleveland, right? It would seem that the wisest play for the Browns to make is to sign Matt Flynn in free agency and keep both of their 1st rounders. If this happens, Robert Griffin III, is many predict the Redskins will trade up for, will automatically fall to Washington at #6. This way, the Redskins along with the Browns can keep all of their draft choices instead of trading up.

If Washington wants to trade up anyway, they would be doing so to ensure that they get Griffin III. This is still not a bad move. This year's 1st rounder(6th overall) and maybe this year's second rounder could be enough compensation to move four spots forward along the draft board. Forget about next year's 1st round draft choice.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

Biased opinion of course, but if I'm the Browns I would sit on those picks and go after Flynn. I wouldn't toss in the towel on McCoy just yet either.
