Ultimately, the Rams need the Redskins to be involved because they don't have any other serious offers right now that would allow them to stay in the top 8 and pick an elite talent in this draft. It makes total sense for the Rams to move the pick to Redskins now because the bidding war in the future is so dependent on the Redskins or Browns to be involved and right now the Browns are lukewarm.
Okay so you have it all figured out that the Redskins are the only serious bidder right now. Good to know...I guess there's nothing else to say.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)

If Tripp is right that the Rams have no other serious bidder than the Skins, then the price either now or later should be comparatively cheap. And if RGIII is our guy and we can trade up for cheap, that should be a slam dunk for us.

If Tripp is wrong and there are other bidders, we still need to go get RGIII if he is our guy.

If Tannehill is our guy then we should take him at 6.

I have no problem with any of these plans. In the end the Shanny's, not me, have to be comfortable with their choice.

It's speculation right now that even the Redskins are involved, but per the premise of the rumors, we kind of have to assume that the Redskins are out there alone.

Maybe the Rams have exactly zero serious offers right now for the second pick. Actually, this is even likely right now. Eskin only reported what the Redskins are willing to do, not what the Rams are going to get.

I have read other rumors that the Dolphins, Seahawks and Browns have talked to the Rams also. At this point it's all rumors but it sounded like you are stating as fact or at least that you have inside info that says that the skins are out there alone making outlandish trade offers.

Well, I feel you could have dismissed that thought when I described the price as reported by Eskin like this:

Describing it as the Redskins vs. time simply points out the reality that the pick wouldn't get moved before draft day if the Redskins were to abstain from being part of the discussions. If you take out the biggest player for the pick, then there simply isn't much trade interest.

So what do you suggest the Redskins do at QB until draft day if RG3 is who they really want? Do they do nothing and hope to win this stare down with the Rams? Do they blow 20 mil of this years cap room on Manning when they really want RG3? As of now John Beck is their only QB on the roster. Maybe making the trade now costs an extra pick or two but it also saves a bunch of wasted cap dollars on unneeded contingency plans...

That's a fair point, and I wasn't really trying to advise the Redskins to wait. Rather I was simply pointing out that I don't believe there is any merit to the argument that if the Redskins wait, they won't be able to get RG3 later.

As long as the Browns are as non-committal about moving up as they currently are, the Redskins (not the Rams) control the action. The Rams are not *representing* the RG3 pick. Before we can conclude that RG3 is definitely going to be the second pick, the Rams would have to come out and at least bluff the fact that they are going to take him in that slot if they don't get a deal to their liking. At that point, you'd have to at least honor the fact that you have to go through the Rams to get RG3 because if you don't, he's going to quarterback the Rams next year.

Fisher's not doing that though. He said he's going to deal the pick to highest bidder. Right now, that's the Redskins. So the Redskins, not the Rams, hold the cards right now.

That can change of course. If the Dolphins were to offer their entire 2012 draft plus their 2013 first rounder for the second pick, they'd probably get RG3. But that was never not the case. Any team who wants to double market value can have the pick. They won't have enough talent around him to win, but they can have him.

I'm not saying the Redskins should definitely wait out the Rams here, and I'm not saying they shouldn't make the trade now. I am saying that it's not necessary that they agree to terms at the combine, or they'll never have another chance to get him.

But a lot of things can swing the market in the Redskins favor: Flynn might leave Green Bay, Manning might leave Indy, Kolb could hit the market again, Tannehill might shoot the lights out at his pro day. Kellen Moore might show up to his pro day completely jacked (well, maybe not that last one). The Redskins can call their shot here, and probably should.
