You ever try using the pen tool to cut them out and them changing the path to a selection? That'll give you a nice vector-based edge that's VERY clean.

It's an either/or situation. They taught us to use the eraser in school, but I found it quicker using the pen tool and then changing the path to a selection. If that seems quicker to you, you might want to give it a try.

HA! I was thinking about sending that to him in a PM but I thought anyone else who used Photoshop might find that useful.
