I think his second year is going to be the true indicator. He's a new QB in a new offense in which nobody has game film on. As far as what he's done so far, I'd say it's very impressive to say the least. The guy still runs way too much at this point and it's eventually going to catch up with him. He took some shots yesterday he had no business taking as a QB.

We're going into week 8 now, I think it's safe to say there's some film out there on him.

Well. It's pretty much like Jim Zorn's offense. Started out great the first half of the season and then went to shit after defenses caught up with him. We'll see. He's been impressive, but it's entirely too soon to call him the real deal/bust quite yet. Without a doubt, he'll be rookie of the year with this showing.

All I meant was he's been the real deal so far. Of course you can't see into the future, but it appears his future is going to be really bright.

The Panthers being a home state team hold a special place in my heart. I hope they do well, and I hope Cam makes me eat crow.

It's too soon to call him the real deal? It's like Jim Zorn's offense? Based on what statistics?

All he is saying is that Zorn went 6-2, before falling to earth. Newton looks real enough, but half a season, isn't enough to proclaim a rookie a success. Other reminders, Horton looked to be the real deal, but after a year, couldn't find it anymore.

Bottomline, If Newton continues to play at this level he will prove himself, and for now he certainly is wowing everyone with his play after a shortened off-season, that is for sure.

Has any rookie QB has ever played this good this soon?

Seeing as how he has set certain records, I would say no. But some great qb's also didn't set the world on fire right away. What proves greatness is sustained high quality play over time. Right now he has certainly played at a high level.

Big Ben, Joe Flacco, and Matt Ryan. Before that you'd have to go back to Dan Marino.

That was the point of the Zorn example. The first part of the season, he was new and there was no game film on his offense. Remember that Zorn for NFL coach of year and Portis for MVP talk at the half? The second half (and following season) the defenses had caught up with him and stuffed anything he put on the field. EVEN THE ELUSIVE SWINGING GATE!(following year)

Kid has been outstanding this year as a rookie, and even more impressive because it's at the QB position. He made all the throws he needed to yesterday and ran when he had to. I'm not going to sit here and say......."Well, Smitty is the reason.......or Haslett didn't do this or that on the defensive scheme". A bunch of bullshit woulda/coulda scenarios there. In the end he tore us a new asshole.

Lots of stuff NC Skins and I don't agree on off-the-field, but on-the-field we agree far more often than not and certainly on this issue. Let's not annoint Cam yet, he hasn't played half a season. Has he exceeded my expectations for him in the passing game, so far certainly.

Without a full rehash of where I stand, just do a search on my user name and Cam Newton. That'll give you all the facts you should need.
