Re: Redskins vs. Steelers Preseason Pre-Game Thread
Per John Keim
WR Niles Paul. Has stood out because of his consistent hands. He’s a physical player and is as anxious as anyone to show it on the field. I like that he pesters WR coach Keenan McCardell for more reps/time. He needs to polish his routes. On pace for: Practice squad/No. 6 WR spot. Long way to go but had a good opening two weeks. Needs to make plays on special teams in the preseason. Right now he’s behind guys like Terrence Austin and Donte Stallworth. But can you keep Stallworth as a fifth or sixth WR if he doesn’t play special teams. Don’t think so. As Keim says do you keep him as a #5 who doesn't even play ST? Doubt it. |

But yes i'd guess Paul or Austin for that last spot. Paul is known as a special teams standout right? KR? Moss, Gaffney, Armstrong, Hankerson, and Paul I'm guessing. |

Banks will still be a weapon on punts. The rule won't affect punt returns at all.

Plus the other thing to remember is that while the total number of touchbacks is going to skyrocket, the value of a long return is going to say the same or possibly get more valuable. It's going to happen less across the league, not just to Brandon Banks.

That's the way for him to increase his chances of making the roster; contribute as a wide receiver, his listed position. On a 53-man roster, it's hard to justify keeping a player who is just a return specialist, no matter how good he is. Banks played just 15 snaps at receiver last year, but to his credit he does want to do more.

And although i think kickoff returners are now significantly less important i agree with Buster that punt returns is where he needs to be a weapon at. Although I was more impressed with his punt return then his kick returns there’s a much more important duty when returning punts; making sure you don’t drop it…. which banks has had a little bit of trouble with. I say if he drops one kick off or one punt in the pre-season hes gone. Either way I think hes on the outside looking in and is gonna have to have a bunch of nice returns, no drops, and one TD return or doesn’t make it. He was the funnest thing to watch on the team last year and I hope he makes it, just not sure at what cost.

And you'll need a good return man to force other teams to kick touchbacks to get even decent field position. I expect leaguewide points scored to decrease significantly this season.
