Between the vices and the work that's hell on a body. Not a big fan of the show but he seemed like a cool guy, which reigns above all.

As far as the physical work the captains don't do much but sit up there and chain smoke. Not a healthy lifestyle plus the stress. Love to know the average life expectancy of one of them.

I really think the lack of sleep must do a number on these guys. I really don't know how they do it sometimes. Of course the smoking is big too. I think a lot of these guys are big boozers too. They live hard and die hard.

I thought that he used to do the work before he became a captain? I might be wrong.

Yeah he did. I think most captains work their way up through the ranks.

Re: 'Deadliest Catch' captain dies

You just don't walk onto a boat and become a captain. You start from the very bottom and do every job on the boat before you ever get a chance to sit in the captains chair. It does help to get there maybe a little faster if your family owns the boat but they still work their way up. About the only job they don't have to work at is as the engineer/mechanic but by the time they become captains they know the boat pretty well. I believe I read he started working on boat at the age of 9 but it was not in the Bering Sea.
