Re: The image of Redskins fans?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Redskins one of the top pro sports franchises in the world? We haven't won a playoff game since Desert Storm, yet Fed Ex sells out and Redskins merchandise still flies off the shelves.

Philly fans are pissed off well, because they live in Philly. If you've spent any amount of time in this city, you'd know that there is certainly no "brotherly love".

Dallas fans are the Yankees fans of football. They span the entire nation and talk out of their ass and always, always buy into the hype.

New York fans are generally the more articulate of the three, but will run off at the mouth if given the opportunity, especially given their collection of defensive linemen that brought them an upset over the cocky Patriots.

Redskins fans may be perceived as delusional and have been somewhat spoiled by the success of the team throughout the 80's. Therefore many "fans" expect a division title, or at the very least a playoff appearance every year. The problem is, Washington D.C. and the metropolitan area is a melting pot. It's sprawling suburbs harbor people of all types from all over the world. The same could be said for many major American cities, but in my opinion D.C. stands alone. It's the nation's capitol and is probably despised unfairly in sports due to the fact that it's the home of many corrupt politicians. However, Washington is definitely a football town and it's fans by in large are loyal and true.

The only thing that irks me is the people that I haven't talked to in years saying things like, "You're STILL a Redskins fan?" or "I would've had to have picked a different team by now." What the fuggedy fugg is that all about?
Dude, I cant tell you how much I've heard Sh*t like this- especially from Philly and Dallas fans. 'Fair weather' or 'bandwagon' are terms that they are simply not familiar with... hypocrites.

DC is not "the south". The majority of VA is not "the south" and a lot of people from south of of tobacco road still view DC, Philly, Boston, New York and Baltimore as one location.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Fantastic post. I remember someone arguing with me that Skins fans are only fans when things are going well. That should explain all the season ticket holders year in year out and all the merchandise being sold....

Discussions with one seems an exercise in futility since facts are not looked upon with the same importance as who can talk the loudest. I have an ex-brother in law who wears Cowgirl gear any chance he gets and probably couldn't tell you who won the Super Bowl last year. I have taken it as my duty to see that his son (my nephew) is not raised in the same ignorance as his father and doesn't buy into the Cowgirl "hype". America's team my ass. Hail Redskins!
I think is true of a lot of people who watch football. My mom claims to be a Redskins fan but couldn't even tell you 3 current starters. She screams with the best of them on Sunday afternoons but, outside of the Super Bowl, never watches an NFL game. IMO, I'm a huge football fan and primarily an NFL fan, but am passionate about the SKins above all else.

God bless your mother! I guess I just notice it more with Cowgirl fans because they seem to be the most vocal without any provocation, facts be damned.

I believe the statues of Bobby Lee and Stonewall Jackson (Both Virginians) on monument avenue would qualify Virginia as being "Southern". So would the Daughters of the Confederacy on BLVD, not to mention Jefferson Davis Highway, Semmes Avenue, and the museum of the Confederacy. I'm just saying . . . .

This is who we've always been (esp at RFK), this is who we are, this is who we will always be. No one else can claim this.

YouTube - Art Monk Hall of Fame Induction Applause

(video sticks for about 20 secs but then straightens out)

Re: The image of Redskins fans?

I think Skins fans have a fine image with regards to the NFL fandom as a whole. I only really get to see them when they come to Detroit. THe away group is awesome, very respectful, and most of all VERY LOUD cheering on the Skins. Last year, I was lucky enough to sit near them and they just about made as much noise as the home crowd. Never seen a fight break out between Skins and Lions fans even back in the Silverdome days, which is amazing, as there were always fights with just about every other opposing team that went to the Silverdome. Skins fans are looked at in a decent light I think. Now our owner, that might be another matter!!!!!

I don't buy that totally. You want delusional nuts? Try Ohio State fans. I am a Buckeye fan myself, but the homegrown variety are totally crazy!!!!!

Yeah, you ever see a satellite image of the entire East Coast and it almost does look like one great mega city.

One aspect of the south that many forget (namely STUPID TEXANS) is that the capitol of the confederacy was RICHMOND, VA!!!!!

Yeah, I forgot the White House of the Confederacy. I'm sure they've got something similar in Raleigh.

Plus the sweep we had this year. Too bad they made it to the NFC championship game (again). That's really all they've got.
