I understand that and Mack certainly seems like a solid prospect, but I would just be careful about calling a player a "can't miss pick." I have seen way too many busts in this league to consider that their is such a thing as a "can't miss pick."

It definitely is a risk, but Kendall has stayed healthy and played solidly for 2 seasons in a row now. I think he has another solid season left in him and re-singing him buys us some time to develop a replacment.

Didn't Miami draft a bunch of O-linemen last year? Haven't some actually played already? Hasn't Miami won a bunch of games this year?

Hell, even the sorry-assed Lions drafted a very good OT - - Gosder Cherlius - - who is playing RT decently for a horrid team. Cherlius could have started at RT for the Skins easily this year.
The Redskins should take a look at Miami's draft list from last year and just follow it (they drafted a whole bunch of offensive and defensive linemen).

Re: Mark Tauscher?

Someone had a good point on the postgame show on Redskins Radio yesterday -- Joe Jacoby was able to extend his career by about 5 years when they moved him from left tackle to right tackle. Could the same be true for Chris Samuels? Maybe draft a LT high and move him over?

If or when Samuels shows he's just able to protect against top-notch DEs anymore -- which I don't think is the case just yet -- that sounds like an interesting option.

Someone brought that up here a couple of weeks back as well, I think it might have been Dirtbag359. I like the idea, and I liked what I saw out of Heyer yesterday at LT. But is he ready to be a full-time starter at LT? Probably not.

I love the idea of Sameuels at RT, especially with Jansen beside him at G. Jansen's problems now arent't run blocking (notice how much better we run right when he's in) it's in the passing game. I don't know if it's injury or age, but it seems he's just not lateral enough anymore to play RT. Rabach is serviceable (though Vic Carucci and Gil Brandt both think he is deserving of being in the Pro Bowl) and Kendall should be fine for another year until Reinhart can take over. If we can trade up for Eugene Moore it would be a great line. If not draft a 3rd round LT and bring in a UFA that can hold the spot for 2-3 seasons.
Fabini and Heyer are decent backups.

Re: Mark Tauscher?

we need some youth. extending Samuels is an OK thought. but Jansen? the guys been horrible for at least the last 2 years. lets draft an o lineman, with the thoughts of him starting immediately

If we target a stopgap measure at a cheap price, I'm fine with signing someone over 28. If we target a franchise tackle at $7M per year, I agree that we shouldn't sign anyone over 28. However, that would rule out Jordan Gross, who I believe will be 29 by the start of next season.

Re: Mark Tauscher?

Just to be clear I don't necessarily have a problem with a 31 year old lineman if he's a quality one. Tauscher is average at best. We already have the likes of Fabini and Jansen to fill that role.

given that we have zero young talent on the O line i think it would be smart to get a couple pete kendall types to help bridge the 2 year gap its going to take to put together a young starting talent group of lineman.

i just dont like the idea of expecting 1 or 2 rookies to come in and start right away.

(heyer is still a work in progress and i dont want to rely on him as an answer yet)

just for comparison's sake, I believe the colts start 2 rooks on their o line. I think that was part of their slow start along w/Manning missing camp. It's unlikely we'd get 2 rookies in the draft that could win starting jobs their first year, but it would be great if we did. Unless heyer can transform himself, he looks like a career backup.

Wouldn't mind taking a look at Vernon Carey.
