Re: Portis or Westbrook?
It's hard to compare the two. They play on two completely different kinds of teams.
Portis is an important player but he's not relied upon to be THE ENTIRE OFFENSE. If we lose Portis, we can still win. If they lose Westbrook, they're toast. This has less to do with the individual players' talents and more to do with the workload they're assigned and how Westbrook can have success with the types of plays they call for him (a lot of passes out of backfield). Portis could probably succeed anywhere because he can take a tough running workload OR a role like Westbrook's because he can run, catch and even pass the ball well. But could Westbrook be as good on a team that would use him as a 30+ carry guy? Probably not, he has an injury history even with his 15-carry workload. If Portis were in Philly, he could easily match and probably surpass Westbrook's production. If Westbrook had to play for Gibbs and carry more, he'd probably do OK, but not as well. So, I believe Portis is a better RB because he can be a true RB as well as Westbrook's "Utility" role of RB/WR. I don't believe Westbrook could cut it for an extended period of time outside of Philly. Yes, he's vitally important to their success, but only because they have the offensive gameplan solely based on his strengths and talents. Not every team can/wants to/needs to do that. Portis could succeed anywhere. |

Re: Portis or Westbrook?
Portis hands down. Lets compare Portis pre-redskins to westbrook when he ran the west coast in Denver. Im sure every one would choose Portis.
The way Gibbs ran the offense should not count against Portis, our play calling was terribly predictable. Go back and look at all the game day post. Everyone was complaining about play calling- Run, Run, Pass, Punt. Run, Run,Pass, Punt all in a tight i-formation. Portis has carried this team on and off the field. Theres no comparison to whom the better back is. After this year compare the two backs. Under our new offense Portis will have his best year as a Redskin. |

Re: Portis or Westbrook?
Your joking right?
Portis is better at breaking tackles, blocking, in between tackles, outside tackles, catching, clutch, leadership, and production.

Re: Portis or Westbrook?
Portis is the best blocking tail back I have ever seen in 35+ years of watching NFL football. If you want to disreguard that thats fine but I'm absolutely sure Redskins QB's and WR's put tremendously high value in it. His blocking for his teammates makes the statement that he is all about himself completely ridiculous. Alot of back wont even stick there nose in there and block and even those who do dont do it as well as he does.
To me Portis is the best all-around back in the NFL. He does it all. He can run between the tackles(much better then Westbrook), run outside, catch and block. No on puts the complete package together better then Portics does IMO. He may only be the best at blocking but he's pretty darn good at everything else as well. Take away the predictibility of Gibb's offense and you'll see a whole new Clinton Portis. He'll get the ball in different spots and in better areas to succeed. You wont know what is coming like has been the case these past few seasons. I respect Gibbs but his smash mouth football wasn't as successful in term two because the athletes are so much bigger/faster/quicker then they were during his first stint as Skin's coach. Portis will have a huge year this season. Westbrook is more elusive(or seems so) because he is in a situation where the Eagles offense is designed to get him the ball in space. Portis hasn't had that since he played in Denver. Get Portis the ball in space like Westbrook gets it and he'll be equally effective if not moreso on big plays. Portis alread is better at grinding it out and blocking. It's hard to tell if he is better or worse at recieving because Gibbs rarely threw him the ball and when they did it was as a safty valve not as a primary reciever. Portis is also a much stronger runner. All things taken into account Portis is a better back then Westbrook. |
