Re: what will happen with springs

The truth is Smoot,Rogers or who ever is back there will be fine if we up grade our pass rush! Carter is fine look to him to have a better season but we need more of a rush!

Smoot/Rogers at the Corners and Springs/ Taylor at the Safeties. That will put us in top 5 secondaries in the NFL. Yeah thats right move Springs to Safety

he WILL NOT pay himself out of here. after lavar did that, the union stepped in and made that impossible to do for any future deal, and also gave the agent that allowed that to happen a nice 2 year suspension.

I think there will be an all out camp competition for positions in the secondary. We have alot of players with alot to prove back there.

You can't really believe that. Smoot has shown he cannot cover anyone's top receiver and Rogers has yet to show he can. Those guys are not going to frighten anyone. Cornerback is not a position where you can hide weakness, no matter what you do.
Granted, a pass rush will help. But how much it will help is a much bigger question with those two starting at CB.
Springs is essential, and if not him, another impact corner. I don't put Smoot in the "impact corner' category. Unfortunately, right now he's in every receiver's "chump" category. (I don't know that there is an impact corner left out there. A mishmash of chumps is what we used last year to no avail.)
As to Springs having leverage.. I don't know if he really does. His age is up, and his injury history is long. He can be very good when he is on the field, but he is not in a position to be able to guarantee he'll play for anyone for significant time to warrant a huge contract. Unfortunately that holds true for us as well. Springs is a terrific player when helathy, but he cannot be counted upon to stay on the field. I guess in that light signing second tier corners like Smoot or this cat from the Rams who's dropping in today may be the only option. I don't see them as that big of an improvement over last year's mix and match crop, especially if they don't flat out change the philosophy of the DB coaches.
I hope Rogers can step up and warrant his draft postion. I'd feel a hell of a lot better about the Springs situation and the potential Smoot signing if he did.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Uhh, that might be pushing it a bit don't you think? I believe we'd have to wait and see how that unit performs before we can annoint them with a top five ranking.

Taylor has the most promise, but even he still needs to make some progress. Springs -5 years might put him near the top, but those days are long over. I see absolutely NOTHING in Carlos Rogers even on paper to confuse him for being included in a top five lineup. And as much as we all seem to love Fred Smoot, he just got released by the Vikings -- so don't get your hopes up for a Martin Mayhew-like #2 performer. A solid nickel maybe.

Trust me, we need one more world beater at corner for us to be considered anywhere near the top 15.

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

Keep in mind that Springs has leverage NOW, but wait until June 1 gets closer. Most of the big $ will have been spent, there will be a few teams w/some interest & $ but not like there is now.
I think the Skins are playing a waiting game w/him cause they know he would rather hit free agency then renegotiate w/them for less. Does he only have 1 yr. left on his deal?

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

If I'm correct; trading Springs before June 1 or keeping him will have the same cap impact, 7.5 mil?

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

The proposed secondary of Smoot, Springs, Taylor, Arch, Prioleau, and Rogers is a good secondary. Especially if Smoot can get back to the level he was at when he left... He had major heart and played through some tough injuries for us, plus he has SWAGGER... I don't think our secondary had that last year. What is the possibility to get Jared Allen? have we explored that angle?

Speaking of swagger, imagine the "Walk It Out" dances including Smoot.

It's going to be like f-ing Soul Train up in this bitch! I love it.

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

Right now Springs is our only starting caliber cornerback on the team. Rogers and Smoot are nickel caliber currently. Therefore, any talk about releasing Springs would be devastating for our secondary, in my opinion, unless we have a clear #1 CB as a replacement.

We could use another corner for depth given the brittle nature of Springs (and Smoot for that matter). Instead of pursuing guys like Travis Fisher, I would like to see the Skins' FO end this cycle of rotating CBs and try to snatch Josh Wilson in the draft. I think we'll need to try to get a third rounder from someone to do it--but how about getting a young guy in there so that next year--when we will be contemplating dumping Springs again--we don't have to go through this merry go round again.

Alternatively, maybe a veteran CB will be let go post June 1 cuts and he could round out our CB depth.

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

There's nothing nickel about either of them. Both Smoot AND Rogers are starting corners, Smoot borders on #1 ability. Let's stop the lemming-mentality, Rogers didn't have that bad of a year.

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

#1 corners can be placed on an island to single cover the other teams best reciever. I am confident that Springs can do that. Does anyone think that Smoot or Rogers could do that? Could they do that on the other teams 2nd receiver? Well Mike Tomlin and Greg Williams don't think so--since Smoot was on the bench in Minnesota and Rogers needed safety help most of the season.

Re: Gibbs wants Springs back!

with those guys imagine drafting a guy like Josh Wilson of Maryland for depth and you have a decent secondary. Did Wright get cut?

Perhaps you could make the case that the Rogers-bashing might have been overkill, but let's not fall into the notion that all our troubles are gone and we are worry-free with him either.

All he has to do is live up to his #9 overall status. Then the bashing will stop.
