NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
NY_Skinsfan (Bob) has requested that I post this message here. He needs help logging on to TheWarpath.net. He hasn't been able for the past few weeks from home. I'm pasting his request below:
"I am unable to get to thewarpath.net. This is the only site I can not get to. My internet connection is fine, I don't have any firewall issues (that I can see). I am unable to ping the site and I tried to run a tracert and came up short there too. I talked to a timewarner guy and he led me to a site called dnsreport.com. When you enter thewarpath.net into the site it gives a long status report list and the site looks fine. One thing the timewarner guy pointed out was the one warning message: Single Point of Failure WARNING: Although you have at least 2 NS records, there is a chance that they may both point to the same server (one of our two tests shows them being different, the other is unsure; it appears that there are one or more firewall(s) that intercept and alter DNS packets (some versions of Linux reportedly have a built-in firewall that does this, too)), which would result in a single point of failure. You are required to have at least 2 nameservers per RFC 1035 section 2.2. The timewarner guy thought this might have something to do with it so we left it at that until I talked with Matty. Matty checked with his server people and they said that everything was fine on their end and that this is an isolated incident. I use Mozilla v.2.0 but it won't work in Internet Explorer either. This just happened about two to three weeks ago. I have intalled anything or made any changed to my computer at all. It's like, when I type in thewarpath.net into the address bar it says it's looking but can't find the site at all. If anyone can help me please email me. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, NY_Skinsfan amybob@nycap.rr.com"

thewarpath.net won't let you login, but www.thewarpath.net will. has he tried clearing his cache etc, restarting and trying again?

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
I had this problem before. I couldn't get to the site from home, but I could get there fine at work. I don't know what caused it, so I don't have much advice. However, my computer had some malicious software that made its way in. Every time you'd click a link in Google, it would open some page other than the link you clicked on. It was like something was intercepting the click, and then taking you to a sponsor site for that particular product. So, I resinstalled my OS, and viola! it works now (big surprise) ... although, I'm sure NYskins doesn't want to do all that (yet).

That's good advice by that guy.
ipconfig /flushdns Tell him to insert that in a command prompt window. Also, I would check his hosts file to see if somehow, someone inserted the site in there and it got blocked.

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
Because if somehow this site got cached on an error and it's negatively cached, until he flushes the DNS, it'll continue to try and bring up the error.

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
It's probably a DNS (Domain Name Server) problem. When you type "thewarpath.net", your browser contacts the DNS to find out what the IP is for that URL. If the DNS is hosed, has become corrupted, or has become hijacked, that could cause problems.
Try OpenDNS: OpenDNS > Get Started |

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
If it is a DNS problem, then NYSkins should be able to get to the site using the IP: 69.36.168.85
As for the browser cache issue, I believe that in IE if you press F5 or refresh the page the browser requests the page again from the server -- and not from cache. Although DNS cache is a different issue.

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
I think it's Shift+F5 to reload the page from the server. Good idea with the IP address, though - that should quickly tell the problem.

Damn, finally. Thanks a lot for the OpenDNS idea. That's what did it. I wasn't able to connect using just the IP address, but after I did the OpenDNS I can connect using the IP address. Still can't use the www.thewarpath.net, but as long as I can get this far, I'll figure it all out later. Malcolm, thanks for all the emails....I was going through some serious withdrawal. Now if you'll all excuse me for a day or two, I bet I have a shit load of posts to read and catch up on. Thanks a lot guys. |

No problem. That open DNS is pretty cool. I'm going to remember that for my outside clients.

Re: NY_Skinsfan Needs Help Accessing the Site
Glad it worked!
As an aside, if anyone has a MotoQ, OpenDNS can also speed up web surfing on the Q, since Verizon's default DNS servers are slow as molasses. |
