Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
I was thinking about this today as Portis went on IR for the year. I believe Denver got the better half on this one. Didn't they get a 2nd rounder too? If anyone out there knows who this players is I'd like to know. For the life of me I still can not believe that Snyder did not pay this guy. I know Champ told the media he hated the constant change but somehow we should have kept this guy. As much as I like Portis, this is another move we should not have made. Great cover corners are just too hard to find and we are sure paying for it now.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Yeah it sucks now, but what were you saying last year???
Portis was our main man and we made it into the playoffs, without coverage issues. I am so sick of this crappy debate. It has already come up a couple times. Yeah corners are hard to find, but Portis is young, Champ is old. Portis can directly affect the score. Period, we got the better deal. You all would agree last year, dont let one year blind your judgement.

I know this is so stupid, I hate when fans get so caught up in the moment they forget about how the trade has helped us.
I guess fans are like this everywhere...

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Minus the fact that until Portis we had Trung Candidate as our main RB, and with the second round pick that Denver got I beleived they drafted Tatum Bell. And boy he has ben tearing it up hasnt he...

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Sorry. I'm a rookie to the site. But I'm not caught up in the moment. Yes I bough it up becasue Portis is hurt but I always believe (most of the time) that you try and keep defense over offense.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
My point is I would rather have kept the draft pick and Champ. That's all. Plus we drafted Betts so that 2nd rounder could have been used on o-line or d-line depth.

Our D was fine, with Smoot, Rogers, Springs. All the sudden it has struggled, and then this arguement comes up. That is why I am sick of it. People are just looking for blame where there isnt any.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
He was also asking for alot of money and we had to look future. He is getting old now, doesnt have too many years left.
And despite what everyone is saying, Rogers IS getting better.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Denver won the trade because of the extra pick that turned into Bell. If it were even up CP for CB as it should have been I would call it a draw...

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Several years ago, I heard from a friend, who had a friend that knew Champ Bailey, that Champ Bailey said he was going to leave the Redskins when his contract was up. My reaction was, Bullshit! He's our top pick, etc.
Sure enough, when Champ's deal was up he basically forced a trade. I don't think he would have re-signed with us for any amount of money. We were fortunate to get anything for him. I think it was a 2nd round pick for Portis and the exclusive right to negotiate with Champ. The draft is overrated. There are some teams who know how to pick good players. Many do not. I would trade any team's second round pick for Portis. I read about how the importance of the draft then think of Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Andre Ware, Blair Thomas, Gary Beban, etc... There's no guarantee in the draft. I believe that consistent solid drafting is a solid way to build a team. But some teams will never get it done that way. Since George Allen, The Redskins haven't done it this way. There was a great draft early in the Gibbs/Beathard era (1981 - May,Grimm, Manley,Charlie Brown, Didier) that helped the Redskins to their glory years. But, for the most part, our teams were built with free agents or trades. Recently, when we have had picks we took Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, Rod Gardner,Patrick Ramsey, Taylor Jacobs and (sadly on this list) Lavar Arrington. Let's hope the players we have drafted since Joe Gibbs returned (Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley, Carlos Rogers, Jason Campbell, Rocky McIntosh) fare better. From 1999 through 2003, The Skins had 32 draft picks (including 1st round 2,3 in 2000). Only 4 of those players are on the roster. We had picks. I think Taylor, Cooley and Rogers will be solid. I'm pulling hard for Jason Campbell. Rocky is a rookie. I don't feel like he's going to be a bust. Some of the 'so called' smart teams (Patriots, Steelers) benefit from other teams stupidity and end up with Polamalu, Roethlisberger, Maroney and other players who drop while other teams pick Robert Gallery (insert bust here). Redskins got someting for nothing. |
