I don’t disagree with this. But there’s another part that I think is overlooked. Nearly every running play has the option of 5 holding on to the ball. This creates a moment of hesitation, a moment where the focus is on taking or not taking the handoff. This has obvious overall benefits with Jayden’s legs, but it slows down the initial burst.

Big ups to JD, Terry, Brown, Ekeler, these guys just kept coming up with plays in key spots.

On to Detroit, anything is possible.
Coaching like that literally cost the Lions going to the SB last year. Yeah it's fine cause we won but you take the points. Don't try and be the smartest guy in the room. The going for it, macho stuff in the end will lose games. See Brandon Staley.

Agree. There has to be a balance. Going for every 4th down especially when 3 points is a given in a close will lose you games. Quinn and Campbell are very aggressive on 4th downs. Hope Quinn takes the 3 at certain opportune times.

Campbell can be borderline reckless at times with going for it, I've yet to see DQ go for it when it's a clear situation he should be taking points or punting, like a 4th and long. Still, I don't expect to see much kicking this week. It's going to be an all gas no brakes kind of game.

Re: Playoff Victory - Postgame Thread

I think that's the difference between DQ and DC; on the 1st try I'd have gone for it given the field position and (I think) nagging doubts about Gonzalez. I'd say he'll take the 3 when he thinks the flow of the game demands it. At that point going for it was arguably better than risking a missed FG (7 yard loss) and put the Buccs O deep in their own half. Sometimes forcing an opponent into attempting long drives can be better in the long run than 3 points. I also wonder if they planned to go for it anyway pre-game, on the basis it would tip the D hand on covering 4th downs. I think 2 of the play calls were dubious, but maybe they informed later attempts, not to mention how to play out the last drive. I wouldn't be surprised if DQ and KK went over all those 4th downs at length Monday/Tuesday.

if you a strong well balanced team you are less likely to be gambling so many 4th downs but we are not balanced and the more the ball is in jd5's hands the odds are better for us

think of it this way would you rather gamble on Gonzales hitting 40 plus yard field goal or JD5 converting a 4th and say no greater then 10 yards for a first down ( i am just speaking to the form not you specifically matty) PLUS if gonzo misses it it moves the ball back what another 5 yards

Exactly! Time and place!
And I donÂ’t understand all the hate against Gonzales. Those fourth down attempts I was talking about were basically extra point field goals not long distance. Gonzales went five or seven in the regular season with his two misses in Tennessee being one over 40 and one over 50,3 for 3 in the playoffs and 21 of 21 on extra points

He's a career 80% kicker, not very good. He's just 71.7% on kicks over 40 for his career, that's bad. Just 57% on kicks over 50, terrible.

He doinked in the game winner. Another inch or two off and we could be sitting here talking about the offseason.

^^

If we shore up our D next season, you might see less going for it on 4th downs. As it is, our best weapon on D is Jayden keeping drives going, eating up clock. You can call it gambling or you can call it playing the best odds. What you can’t do is question whether it’s working at 13-5.

This is kind of where I am. It was definitely a one sided affair between him and Evans. I would like to chalk it up to rust. The doubter in me says he has played only a season and half worth of games over the last three seasons which is not a great track record.

Next year I need him to be on the field for all 17 games to consider this a success.

I also don't fault Peters for making this trade. Lattimore in the past is far better than any CB we have and would be further along than any Cb we draft. Using a 3rd and basically a 6th for a known quantity and a glaring hole on the team is a fair gamble.

I agree not that great in his career, but I’m talking about this year, and the doink doesn’t count in the decision making because that was the last play of the game and doesn’t factor into coaches decision beforehand. Those were extra point fg’s and he hasn’t missed on one of those all season, everyone’s using the “doink” as justification for going for it on those 4th downs, well I’m not buying what you’re selling. If these were over 45 yard fg’s on 4th down then that’s a different story.

value your opinion

there is a 13-5 heading to the divisional playoff round for the first time in 20 years professional coaching staff that disagrees with you and has proven you wrong on the field

i will say to your point its not a recipe for long term success (multiple seasons); we need to shore up our kicking game and more importantly our
