Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I learned something this year watching playoffs .the system and overall team talent gets you as far as the top dog elite Qb in most cases. Cousins had his chance 2 seasons ago when he had a top offensive team around him and could not win against giants. That game seems to define who he is and at the time I remember everybody calling him out! So here we are he is gone and I for one am relieved . I like Smith and I believe he can have success here but we need other help. NEEDS Run game, WR ....enough of the excuses for Doctson time to step up! I would have rather kept fuller and moved doctson . This team is not better losing Cousins but it could be worse , I agree with all of you who blast the front office I have been saying that a long time but that ain’t changing . Let’s hope we draft smart get some FA in here and maybe next year we can win 9 plus games and have a shot at playoffs!

In a vacuum, I think the team did the best they could, and they must've known that either Kirk was absolutely leaving or absolutely not accepting any thing less than an insane contract.

We resign Zach Brown, draft Denzel Ward and Sony Michel (or similar players) in the 1st 2 rounds, and bring in a good FA LG and lets get after it.
On the bolded, EXACTLY right. Chico, you're most guilty of this.

This trade will be brilliant for the redskins if you draft a qb and realize that is the solution not smith. Smith will actually help him unlike all other QBs.

Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I would listen to DJ Swearinger. Fuller- Best defensive player last year. Preparation. Locker room guy. Look, of course I hope Alex Smith can replicate what Cousins did- this is me even discounting the fact we don’t have a Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce or Tyreek Hill. I just take issue with this narrative that Fuller is “just a good cb” or “just a slot guy” or “our third/backup.” Our defensive captain just called him the best player we had last season on his side of the ball... and those aren’t just emotions talking- the numbers back it up.

Trading a guy like that on a rookie contract for bridge qb who lacks the weapons he had before is hard to swallow. Throw in a third and it just reminds me of a previous trade to give up the best cb in football and a second for a running back (moving Champ was mandatory considering his personal drama in DC, but still- these sweeteners only seem to come from this organization.. different FO, but still).

If Alex Smith is more than a two year bridge QB and he puts up the same stats/record as KC, I’ll actually be sort of alright with this. But i don’t even think the former is true. And I don’t trade our highest rated defensive player for a bridge.

Kelce, Kareem hunt, Hill...decent Oline. Great cast coming off a career year.

In all fairness we do have an entire off season and a draft to find some weapons. I guarantee you we have a better RB at the start of next season. Maybe Reed stays healthy? Economically this is a win for the Skins. It also allows us to groom a young quarterback over the next few years. I would have jumped off a bridge if someone told me we are giving up a third rounder, Fuller, and Cousins for Alex Smith two days ago BUT when I step back it actually makes sense for several reasons.
1)frees up instant cap money
2)settles the quarterback situation and allows us to move forward and address the rest of our needs.
3) I love Cousins, but i can see Smith running Grudens offense with precision and CARE (not turning the ball over - huge).
I do have a question. Cousins is just gone. Right? Meaning we get nothing for him. Is there a way that the Skins could have somehow traded KC for something AND wound up here taking Smith?

You guys get a 3rd rounder for cousins walking if i am not mistaken. It is year after he walks.

Smith has five years left on his contract, with $71 guaranteed. They will not draft a QB in the early rounds.... if at all.

Re: Redskins Trade for Alex Smith

It depends on what you mean by better. Do you mean better skilled, better future potential, or better value?

The distinction is important because based on all those factors, I would compare Kirk to Alex as very closely skilled, Kirk absolutely has better future potential, and Alex has better value in terms of cap value but when considering what we gave up for him it's probably at best a wash.

If you're just referring to skill, that is only part of the full picture (ie. I'd rather Wentz than Brady right now but only because of future potential), but I'll play along:

Brady
Brees
Luck
Wentz
Rothlisberger
Wilson
Rivers
Rodgers
Ryan

I think are all definitely better, but there are about 6-8 that are probably better (Cousins, Stafford, Goff, Carr, Newton, Palmer) , and another 4-6 that might be better (Manning, Keenum, Winston, Mariota, Watson)

He's about a top 15 QB.

Makes things a little better. Thanks.
I was always one to say man if the Chiefs had a real quarterback they would be great but Smith definitely has mobility and smarts. Doesn’t turn the ball over alot at all. I know you guys are excited about Mahomes but I wouldn’t pencil that in as an upgrade just yet. Smith may just be more of a winner than you give him credit for. Not one who does it in spectacular fashion dropping 50 yard dimes BUT one who manages (there is that bad word ...lol) to win.

Cousins isn't getting traded. They would have to tag him first, and he would have to agree to sign the tag. Not happening.

in the big scheme of things yes, but not entirely. Its hard to avoid the history of Cousins as a Redskins and separately, Dan & Bruce as the primary QB decision makers.

Proper arguments can be made as this transaction is poor in itself as well.
