That may be true, but this move let's the team address those areas both through free agency with more available cap room and the draft with a settled qb we don't need to go chasing one.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I'm mostly nervous about a second year player and a former WR starting for us next year. Dunbar has played admirably, but I was hoping he would just be depth. I THINK Moreau should be a starter, but we really don't know.

If anything about the Skins, they're exciting, for better or worse.

If we hadn't botched negotiations years ago, Cousins would still be here, but this might be the best situation we could have hoped for without going pure Joe Flacco on the team.

I think Kevin Sheehan summed it up best this morning saying the Redskins made the best out of a mess they created, and it’s a move that will allow the team to stay competitive the next couple years.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I don't like losing Kendall, but let's think about it this way.

With Kirk - $34 million this year, lose him next year. We still have Kendall and our 3rd next year.

With Alex - Cap hit probably around $18-20 million this year, still have him next year (at around the same cap hit), pick up a 3rd round pick next year (for losing Kirk), and we have to replace Kendall.

So, the question is:

1. Can we replace Kendall (and upgrade other areas) with the $14 million in savings for this year?

2. Is it good to have some guarantee that our quarterback this year will still be our quarterback next year (and for basically as long as we want him to be in the foreseeable future)?

If Alex can perform even close to the same as Kirk in our offense (or even better), then the QB's are even, the 3rd rounder cancels itself out, and you are left weighing Kendall versus $14 million this year and actually knowing who will be our quarterback next year.

Not saying this is an overwhelming success (and that I wouldn't rather have kept Kendall), but it ain't bad either.

Everyone keeps saying we are getting a third round compensation for KC but my understanding is if we go on a FA buying spree we won't get that. The compensatory picks are for teams that are "losers" during FA. Do I have that wrong?

But we most likely would have been worse without it. You aren’t going to get someone that can match Smith’s production next year without breaking the bank, or shipping off alllllll your draft pics to move up, and a rookie may not even pan out.

This was a safe play. For all of you who touts Cousins as being so superior to Smith, look at where it really counts: red zone and 4th quarter. Cousins has never been good either place. So although he puts up great stats between the 20s in the first 3 quarters, he doesn’t make it count when it matters most.

Agreed. I am disappointed with the trade. It's an attempt to salvage the Cousins botch. Alex Smith IMO is a downgrade from Cousins. We know how I feel about giving up Fuller.

However, Smith is a huge upgrade over Colt McCoy. That is not a debate.

Totally agree.

Now, when everyone is saying we're getting a compensatory pick, doesn't who you sign factor in? I would think that signing Smith would mean no pick for us.

Alex Smith is a very good QB but at 33 has taken some hits, has he ever been with Gruden in any way before, just wondering about how long it might take him to pick up a new system?

No because Smith is a trade

How many times has Smith topped 20 td passes in his career? How do you go an entire season and not throw ONE TD to a WR??? HOW????? This is now 2 TEAMS that have replaced him. WHY? I'll tell you why, it's because he's limited. He's not taking you anywhere. Look at the Titans game? He couldn't make any plays in the 2nd half of that game. KC couldn't wait for a sucker and they called us first.

I'm NOT saying Colt is better. What I'm saying is the organization would be better off w/ him as a stop gap, keep Fuller, bring in a vet free agent, keep your 3rd rounder and draft someone.

Good for DJ. He gets it and he knows how good Fuller can be.
