You'd be foolish to pay big time money for a guy to play a different role in a different defensive scheme. People, you can't just plug players in a slot and expect the same results. You'd think you'd know that after the Adam Archuleta deal. Buying a square piece and smashing him into a round hole.

Hardy benefits from having a tremendous D-line.

We took Cofield and Carriker out of different schemes and they've adjusted fine.

What is it about Hardy that makes him unfit for a 3-4 DE? He is 290 lbs. after all. IMO he could be a quick, penetrating 3-4 end which is precisely what we need.

Alas, he likely isn't going anywhere anyway.

Carriker was cheap, and Cofield wasn't that expensive. Cofield still isn't suited for the NT even though he's a hell of a job as a run stopper. We are talking about a 13mil+/yr salary for a guy you don't know will fit in your scheme. Comparing apples to oranges really.

You sell Cofield short. Cofield has been a leading sacker from the NT position for a couple of years now. Cofield has thrived in a new scheme.

Moving from big 4-3 end to small 3-4 end is not as drastic as Archuleta's change. Hardy can kick ass in that role.

Panthers have cap issues. Hardy wants a similar deal to what Charles Johnson got last year 6 years $76 mil. They can't afford both free agents, let alone both D-ends. To franchise Hardy it would cost $12 mil. Panthers also have 19 other players eligible for free agency.

Panthers have only $15 mil in cap space.

Thanks, that's good to know. Maybe Hardy or Mitchell will become free.

I hope you're right, and we do get a shot at signing Mitchell. I would much rather sign him than spend a draft pick on a safety.

On a different note, your new avatar is hilarious. If Gruden turns out to be the new Zorn, though, I'm going to blame you.

Captain Munnerlyn would be a good target. He'd make a fine nickel back and return man....or could push Amerson in camp for the starter spot.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents

Munnerlin would be a good signing.

If Carolina has a choice to let either Hardy or Mitchel walk it's going to be Hardy. So I think Mitchel is not going to hit the market but Hardy will. They already have big money wrappe up in DEs, the likelyhood of signing another is low. Where as safety would create a bigger need for them.

Still like te idea of Captain Munnerlin though, and I would imagine he will be available.

Not anymore. Try $29 million in cap space.

The Panthers are approximately $29 million under the projected cap of $132 million and could be clearing room to re-sign or put a franchise tag on free-agent defensive end Greg Hardy.

Restructuring veteran trio’s contracts gives Carolina Panthers $7.25 million in cap space | CharlotteObserver.com

Hopefully the whole practice of signing 4-3 players for our 3-4 defense went away with Shanny.

If Captain Munnerlyn were so good he'd be a Major by now.

p.s. My apologies for the bad joke. I couldn't help it because I've been waiting a while for the opportunity to say that.
