Obviously most people here are gonna be against an internet tax, but whats your reasoning for being anti-internet tax?

As the article notes, your property is taxed, your income is taxed, your investments are taxed; so should your emails/bit use be taxed?

If you are anti-internet tax, are you also anti-property or income or investment taxes as well? If not, why?

Im thinking we will see an internet tax of some sort within 15 years. A transparent tax would be too difficult to put into action and too cumbersome to collect on. My guess is that we will see a VAT/excise style of tax thats tiered and is enforced at the internet service provider level.

If history prevails, initially only the top users of the internet will be subject to the tax, although one can only assume it will be applied to smaller users as time goes on.

I suspect once the government has a financial interest in the internet, it will also become easier for them to justify the use of regulation to protect those interest. Kind of like federal highway laws and regulations applied to reimbursements from taxes, except in this case they could be called federal “information highway” regulations.

Finally i suspect, certain users (large corporations) will in time get tax credits that are linked to internet costs/taxes (think GE or big oil with the tax credits they are entitled to now).

I think the saying goes, if its moving tax it, if its still moving regulate it, once it stops moving subsidize it.

Found this article today, and it's pretty interesting. How TurboTax has been lobbying hard to keep from the automated type of tax filing many other countries see.

Personally, I'd love to see something like England where you get basically a tax code, everything comes directly out of the check. If you get overcharged, you can get it back, if you get undercharged, the gov't sucks it up.

The sales tax thing isnt gonna last much longer. In VA sales tax on purchases from Amazon will start in i think October. We will probably see a state sales tax for almost everything on the internet within the next 5 or so years.

An indirect federal bit or email or data tax will come after the sales tax thing gets sorted out. My guess is in about 15 years.

Perhaps making it easy for someone to take your money allows you to be complacent with them taking even more of it?

It would be nice if the tax code was so simple you didnt need Quicken, an accountant, or the Goverment to do it for you. Im sure Quicken was against Herman Cain's idea too.

Your post and my post have nothing to do with each other. The fact is this is an easy to implement and convenient feature that most people could use to file their taxes. It is heavily opposed by folks in the tax business (obviously) the problem is that our politicians are more empathetic to what these huge businesses want than what is best for our nation.

That's the worse thing we could have. I personally think everyone should have to pay their own taxes either quartley or monthly. Then people would start to actually feel the pain and realize how much they pay in taxes each month. Ask 90% of the people and they cannot tell you what they pay in taxes because the goverment forces the employers to do their dirty work. Out of site out of mind. I have to pay federal and state taxes monthly and can tell you what I pay in SS, Federal witholding, and Medicare. Might be why I'm against any tax increases because I see first hand what I pay and my guess why the goverment forces employers to collect their taxes.
