Re: Changes at RB for 2007
Portis is going nowhere. Throughout all of Gibbs 1.0 glory, we always had two very capable running backs (Riggins/Joe Washington, Riggins/ George Rogers, Rogers/Timmy Smith, Byner/Riggs, Byner/Ervins/Riggs). Remember, both Portis and Betts have each had their share of injuries, so sharing the load should only help. Gibbs should do the right thing and push to give Derrick Dockery a new contract before he becomes a free agent in March. The O-line has been mauling defenses for the past 4 games, and Gibbs should make it a priority to keep them together instead of spending on another glitzy free agent.

Take a look at the salary cap page. Betts signed his extension as the backup. No ifs ands or butts. Why would Portis ask to be traded because the backup runningback is doing great? That makes absolutely no sense. There is no chance that Duckett is back next year. None whatsoever. |

Portis is loving this. He has always openly said that he would love to share the load, and that he wants Betts to succeed. He's never indicated any problem with having more than one back, especially with all his injuries. Every ache and pain of Portis is getting easier to handle with every yard Betts gains. It's going to be a very good 1,2 punch in 2007.

Re: Changes at RB for 2007
Yeah I'm amazed that Betts is the first Redskins back in history to rush for 150+ yards in back to back games. He has been great as a backup this season, and all indications suggest he is looking forward to returning to his backup role next season, if he didn't he wouldn't have signed a contract extension. I'm really looking forward to see both Portis and Betts next season.

before the season is over,he may go past jamie morris as the skin with the most rushes in a game.i think it's 42 in 1988 against the bengals.

Portis #1 (maybe slightly reduced and not on 3rd down to keep him healthier). Betts #2 Duckett will probably be gone and Rock will be #3. Yes, aside from LT...Betts is the best RB in the NFL over the last month, no one can stop him...but a lot of credit goes to the O-Line and we're also forgetting HOW GOOD PORTIS is. It'll be a killer 1-2 punch when CP is healthy and this season has proven that every team NEEDS at least 2 good RBs to compete. Where would we be WITHOUT Betts now? Other teams are seeing it too...the Broncos, Jets, Titans, Dolphins, Lions, Vikings, Jaguars, Panthers, Seahawks, Packers, Bears, Eagles, Falcons, Texans, Raiders, Giants...all of these teams and more have needed capable backups this year because of injuries to their starting RBs. We'd be stupid to get rid of either of them. |

Re: Changes at RB for 2007
I agree that the OL is the main reason the running game is clicking so well now. Some of the holes lately have been gigantic.
Plus I think another reason for the success of the running game is Saunders and the offense are finally getting on the same page as far as him calling what they do well. |

Re: Changes at RB for 2007
I'd still like to see him start scoring a bit more. Portis averaged a TD every 18 touches and 75 yards, Betts is averaging one every 98 & 465, respectively.

Why didn't Gibbs stress this to AL from day 1? We would have beaten alot more teams running the ball.......... |
