100%, I understand why this issue elicits a lot of emotion with so many people. Everyone has the right to feel that Imus is the scum of the earth. But, if people make comments on this site that make you very angry and want to vent, I would suggest simply avoiding the thread containing the controversial issues or posts. We have site rules against personal attacks on fellow posters.

how do you know he was only targeting the black girls on the team. during the rutger press conference each player from the team stood at the podium to speek. i do realize that the majority of the girls are black but why then did the white girls also speak during the press conference ? you make it sound as though i'm defending the guy , all i'm saying is his statement seems to be more sexist then racist. are only black girls called hoes, or is it the "nappy headed" part that makes it racist. i've heard white girls be called hoes before and i've never concidered the words nappy head to refer to any specific race. would imus have been talking about the white girls on the team if he would have said "bad haired sluts" people assume he was targetting the blacks because it was a white male talking about a basketball team . people forget that white poeple still play basketball too.

all these over the top reactions to his statement cause a bigger divide between blacks and whites then the actuall statement itself.

Statements about one person's inability to understand another person's pain are both ignorant and offensive. The mere fact that someone has not experienced something firsthand does not mean they are incapable of understanding it. In fact, if this were so, than education would be meaningless because the point of education is to help us understand those things we have not experiened (Have you been to Antarctica? Know anyone that has? Yet, I bet you understand that it exists).

Much of white america has not experienced racism. That does not mean that the majority of white america cannot understand it. Rather, it is the very attempt to understand it that has created the enviroment neccessary to end the permisiveness of overt racism. For blacks to discredit whites understanding of racism b/c they have not "experienced it" is to end all hope of reconciliation and improvement of race relations.

Why must you make conclusions about Wolfeskins because of his race? Just because a person is white, does not mean that they are incapable of understanding racial issues.

Re: Don Imus

Here's my take very quickly. And I have some very strong opinions about incidents like this one. For the record, I think Inus is a jackass and perhaps racist. Although I'm not totally sure about the latter.

But I will say that we have a double standard in today's society. Had it been JayZ or Diddy who said it, we wouldn't have this same reaction. I promise you that.

I think, in part, Imus, is and has been like subject to our present day culture that makes it acceptable for certain people to say things, but when a white man says it, it's immidiately catorgorized as racism or bigotry.

I agree. There is a double standard, and it should be tolerable for NOBODY to make statements like Imus did. Yet, it is.
Imus, like others before him, have made statements, only to recant them with apologies. Just trying to save their ass.
Like Mel Gibson..........he really thinks the Jews are great because he sobered up? BS, the booze just loosened him up, to tell what he viewed as the truth.
In this country, you get to speak your mind, but that doesn't mean it does not have severe consequences.
I have NO use for bloodsuckers like Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson, and others like him who do more damage to race relations than good..................but Imus NEEDS to go down for his deeds.

If a Jewish man makes insults to another Jewish man using degrading remarks related to physical characteristics used to describe Jews by the Nazi's, it reveals a deep level of self-hatred , ignorance and a completely absent knowledge of their history. The reason a white person in the public or private sector should be held accountable for a racist remark against a non-white person is because the very language and racist meaning of the terms were created by whites to attempt to justify their superiority over all non-white people. Coon, Sambo, Negro were used to make an entire race feel that they were less than human. This is the history of America in black and white. Rappers are mental casualties of war who were left to survive for themselves in the streets of America with no real understanding of who they are , where they come from and how words can be used to empower or destroy a peoples minds.

Everything you said is on point and historically correct, so I have no bone to pick with this aspect of it. In fact, when something like this does come up, as did with Imus, it tends to be a lot of moving pieces to it and people tend to focus only on the comment(s) itself, as well they should.

I think the problem with Imus' comments, in particular, was that they were so degrading, sexist, and ,yes, racist. That being said, I think blacks tend to get a pass when saying such things and yet consider it base and immoral when a white man pretty much echoes those very sentiments.

In some kind of weird and twisted way, some black or a group of blacks have become an enabler to Imus in his views over the years.

Mike Wilbon wrote a very good article in yesterday's Post about the whole thing.

Yeah, his article was definately a good one and it seems to confirm that Imus deserved to be fired.

On a related note, am I the only one who doesn't find Mind of Mencia dumb? The guy does nothing but try to appeal to base-level race jokes. Chris Rock makes a lot of such jokes, but his whole career doesn't rest upon them.

I think Mencia and Rock primarily appeal to their respective races. I say primarily because, the certain all attract all colors. But to Mencia...I can take him or leave him.

I mean, not to sound racist, but who are the marquee Hispanic comedians anyway?

Re: Don Imus

He's an idiot shock-jock who's career, just like all the other shock jocks, is solely based on saying outrageous things to get more people to tune in. Anyone listening to that audio clip should be able to discern that there was no hatred in his voice for black people. It was clearly insensitive but that does categorize him as being a racist. Stupid, but not a hater of black people.

With that line of thinking I would be a racist of white people because rare is the day that goes by that I don't laugh and make fun of the local redneck populace.

I still find it funny for people to classify other humans as another race for the simple fact that their ancestors prospered in a region of the world that caused their skin to appropriately adapt in order to efficiently regulate body temperature and help stave off the damaging effects of the sun.

I agree 100%. He said a dumb, dumb, dumb thing. But, I've listened to the guy for awhile and have never heard any other indication of racism. He should give numerous, public, and sincere apologies and we should move on.

I totally agree with this. There is only one race: Human.

Which reminds me of a Beastie Boys lyric:
I went to get a loan and they asked my race.
I wrote down 'human' inside the space.
It's a disgrace how they try to debase.
It ain't no bank's damn business how our lineage trace.

Re: Don Imus

Did anyone see the press conference from Rutgers.....

Does anyone else think this is just A LITTLE over the top. I mean I dont for one second condone anything the guy said, and if he's fired, I dont really give a crap because he's a moron for saying it....

But seriously, this is just getting a little bit out of hand. Didnt anyone ever remember "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me."

I mean is it really nessacary to have this team paraded out there for some press conference with the President of Rutgers telling the girls how much his heart goes out to them during such a dark period of their lives..... I don't know, I just think this is all a little much.

i totaly agree with you. i saw some of that press conference earlier today. absolutely rediculous. people are way to sensative. i'm not trying to defend the guy but come on, who really gives a crap.
i also agree with the person that brought up the "double standard" issue. there is definately a double standard in todays society. if it had been a black person who said those comments, this would be a non issue, even if the black person would have said something about an all white team it would still be a non issue.
