Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)

Well, I had put in a placeholder here because I didn't think I'd get to this tonight. I asked Matty to fill in last week and we scored 0 points in one of our worst performances ever. So clearly Matty is bad luck. And I didn't have a chance to ask someone else to fill in.

And then Mooby starts complaining, and you know how those Goth kids are...so here we are.

Time to lay the smack down. This will be dedicated to one person.

John Beck I thought it was a good idea to give him a few games and see what he could bring. And now that he's played a few...enough is enough. I've said many times I'm not a fan of his, and I hate that I feel right about what I said. I really, really wanted to be wrong about him. But his arm sucks, he rushes through his reads, misses wide open receivers. It's just brutal. And this isn't some rookie or 2nd year player we're talking about.

Shanahan, rightfully so, was pissed at Trent Williams for his late hit (which my main man Justin Smith totally sold with his little falling backflip). But it was probably just as much because he knew (like everyone else) there is no margin for error at all with John Beck at the helm.

Of course, Shanahan (both father and son), and Allen deserve blame for even putting Beck under center. And Grossman for not putting so much distance between himself and Beck that Beck would never see the field. But Beck, in my opinion, gets to deflect much of the blame to those other people. Too many excuses are made for Beck. And I say...enough is enough.

The best thing that happened to Beck was a lockout so the myth of him could continue for several extra months before he actually had to take a snap. Now that we've seen him play...enough is enough.

I thought the gameplan was sharp. Get the ball to Helu a lot, use short screens as pseudo-running plays, stretch the field and open the passing lanes. And they did. But Beck hardly ever even looked for his receivers.

I'm not mad that we didn't get a QB in this draft. Disappointed, but not mad. Because I think we have made good additions to this team for the long run (sidenote: I know he wasn't a draft pick but man Chris Chester is 100 times the FA pickup Artis Hicks was last year). But we absolutely have to get at least one new QB next off-season. And if we don't start him right away (which I think we should do), I certainly hope Beck isn't the bridge to that guy, because...enough is enough.

I don't see any upside at all with Beck. Meanwhile, Matt Moore with a 3 TD performance today. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'...Moore I think at least has upside. With Beck...enough is enough.

The offense looks inept, but I like what I see from the young rookies (Hankerson, Helu, Paul, Hurt) they will be getting better and better and by the end of the season this offense will improve. This is a slow rebuild, next year with a new QB, a few new young OL, it will be ready to compete. People need to be patient.

Kinda hard to develop young WRs if you don't have a QB that can throw it to them. Aside from developing WRs and RBs, I do hope that we can get a solid offensive line developed this year. We are going to need it if we are going to have a rookie starting next season.

Don't bring positives in here, this is the smackdown. I do think it should be pretty quiet in here this week, unless the crazies show up wanting blood from the Shanahans or Bruce Allen, which would be insanely stupid, almost as bad as tanking the season, coughGusFrerottecough. Long story short, we knew what we were getting into this season when it was declared an open qb competition in training camp.

Then Trent Williams (stupid penalty) needs to be smacked along with Reed Doughty for missing a tackle on Gore that produced a long gainer. Fred Davis and Austin for dropping passes.

More like it. Also, would you have had the confidence that even if we converted that third down, that Beck had what it takes to move the offense down the field to score points? I know I wouldn't have. And I believe Trent Williams when he said he was just sticking up for Mo Hurt and he didn't hear the whistle. Plus, Justin Smith sold it like Manu Ginobili on the court.

Anybody else notice that for the 2nd straight week, Davis was invisible until garbage time? As with two of Grossman's picks against Philly, Davis hardly competed for the ball on Beck's pick yesterday.

Also, Matty's not bad luck. John Beck is bad luck. And I knew you wouldn't resist name dropping Matt Moore after he balled all over the Chiefs today.

My main hope is that the Shannies fit the scheme to whichever qb we draft's strengths next year. That's why all these rookie qb's are doing well, their coaches aren't asking them to do too much.

And I really don't need to rag too much on John Beck here. He played like an undrafted free agent rookie qb today though, he had a bad case of happy feet, staring down receivers, immediately going to his first option even if they weren't open, and missing wide open receivers down the field when he had the chance. It was pretty bad, and I hope nobody was blinded by the pity touchdown we got at the end. We got that touchdown because they rushed 3 the entire drive, and the only time we can ever expect that to happen is late in the game when we're getting blown out and a loss is virtually assured.

But yes, the myth of Beck has been busted. I honestly don't care who we go with at qb for the rest of the season, because even though Rex can move the ball, we can't sit here and convince ourselves that he'll be any better than what he was in the first 5 games of the season.

Also, it's pretty hard to smack down anybody on this team other than Beck right now. The d is on the field too long, they actually held their own somewhat this week, definitely can't smack on the special teams considering Gano balled like a serious ass mofo this week (seriously, you couldn't have paid me to believe that Gano had the brass nads to make a 59 yarder ever in his career) and Rocca is our first half MVP.

Beck, while he has a decent physical toolset(and hence why he became a 2nd round draft pick), is simply not quick enough mentally to play quarterback in this league. Sure, it might get a bit faster with experience, but even so, it will not be fast enough for him to make it as a starter for any team.

By the time it would take to get him to play a bit faster, it'd probably be too late. It's like others have said, we really do have to put this on Shanny for knowingly going into the season with Grossman and Beck as the main options at qb. I do believe that they felt strongly if they improved the team around the qb, then it wouldn't put as much pressure on him. Either way, we're stuck with them for the rest of the season. Just be patient, and know that the savior is on the way.

Bullee DAT. I was actually rooting for Niles Paul to break one on his return so we'd have justification for cutting Banks. Is it me or does he look slower and not as decisive as he was last year in deciding where to go?
