Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
'Mass casualties' after crash at Reno air show - US news - Life - msnbc.com
Boy this is absolutely heartbreaking to read. Not a lot dead so far, thankfully, but at least 50 injured, and we're not talking your standard cuts and bruises, we're talking severed limbs and such. I can't believe such a thing would happen, and from reading the article it appears the pilot actually saved lives by pulling up so he would hit the runway instead of the crowd. I've been to about 4 air shows at Andrews Air Force Base, and not once have I actually thought about the potential consequences if one of the aircraft were to hit the crowd like that. R.I.P. to those who died and my thoughts go out to their families and friends.

Re: Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
Tragic...could have been avoided if we didn't allow 70 yo man fly planes and doing acrobatics with them.

70 years is the cut off date? What do you base that on?

Re: Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
Actually 60 should be the cutoff line. I base it on the fact that old people aren't quick to react, strong enough and they have a tendency to be absent minded.

Older folks doing things is perfectly fine, but any type of application where you need a license (automobile, motorcycle, airplane, etc...) they should have to take a skills test to ensure they are still safe. In this case the pilot's age was not a factor. But, having older folks re-test to ensure they are still safe i don't think is a bad thing, or descriminatory. You have to take a test in the first place to get these certifications, and i don't think its unfair to have people re-test to keep them...

Less dangerous than riding in a car.

I guess I shouldn't have put it that way. The threat has always been there, and I've seen plenty of videos of things like planes crashing at air shows happen, but while I've been there the thought has never crossed my mind that it's a dangerous place to be. A better way of putting it would be I've never really felt in danger at an air show or been uncertain about attending due to the dangers.

Re: Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
The video of the crash seemed unreal, almost like a movie. Terrible.

Re: Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
Doesn't seem that the pilot's age was a factor here. They're looking at mechanical failure or modifications that were made to the plane.

Re: Mass Casualties in Air Show Crash
What are they suppose to say? It was a factor? Give me a break...he was 74 yo doing 2G turns and traveling at high speed.
Not a factor my ass....I would sue the organizers to hell.
