Raiders get Richard Seymour?

New England Patriots deal Richard Seymour to Oakland Raiders - ESPN

No idea how this deal came about.

Wow the Raiders got bent over in this one.

That could easily be a top 10 pick.

Yup. Total panic move. Their defense has been a joke all preseason. I guess adding a DE on the wrong side of 30 who hasn't been himself for a few years is the answer. Especially for a 1st round pick.

I'm jealous of the Patriots FO. They're super smart.

Is he still a very good player? Yes. Is he worth the first pick in the draft next year (which the pick may very well be)? No.

On top of that, this is the last year of the contract. Imagine if they lose him to FA (who knows maybe he's franchised, don't know the status of their FA class next year). If they do, at draft time, they could have lost the top pick in the draft for a player not on their roster.

Earth to Al, Earth to Al.

Oh yeah, NE didn't even have to buy the Raiders a drink. What were they thinking oh that's right it's Al Davis Raiders they aren't thinking. I love Dan Snyder he might do some crazy things but it's always for the better of the Redskins.

Still, Seymour's value at this point is like late-first round, early second round stuff, but the Raiders make some of that back money wise. For a franchise that doesn't have a lot of money, getting Seymour while the Pats pay his bonuses isn't a bad deal.

With that said, he's about 2 years removed from being a dominant player, but about 2 years younger than the traditional Raiders over-the-hill veteran acquisition.

The biggest problem I have with this trade is, um, where does he play in Oakland's defense? Nose tackle?

Re: Raiders get Richard Seymour?

He's 29 years old, he'll be 30 in October and he had 52 tackles and 8 sacks last year. He's probably got a couple of good years or so left in him and as GTripp pointed out, the Raiders may pick a little lower by the 2011 draft. But once again the Pats pick up a good pick and by 2011 everyone will be wondering how the hell they do it.

They don't fall in love with players. It's all business. Respect.

What a crazy trade. I am sorry, but Al, if he was behind this, has totally lost it. And New England comes off looking super smart. The way Al is running the Raiders, that pick is going to be in the top 3.

I find myself wishing we could have convinced Al of Montgomery's greatness :)

Re: Raiders get Richard Seymour?

Well, I'm trying to think of the Redskins equivalent for this trade. We would all trade Corneilus Griffin tomorrow if we could get a first round pick for him, but that doesn't quite add up.

I guess the closest thing to this trade: would you trade London Fletcher tomorrow for a 2011 first round pick? I don't think I would. Not that it wouldn't be a good value, but the value of that 2011 pick to this franchise declines severely if our defense sucks this year. Would our defense suck without Fletch? Probably not, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

Not sure what NE is thinking on this one.

Re: Raiders get Richard Seymour?

That's why you can't get mad at players when at contract time they want the most money possible, I beleive he has 3 SB rings with them and now he's traded imagine his reaction to that. There always screaming players should show loyalty to their team but what about the team showing loyalty to the player.
