Casserly Keeping his options open
 

Interesting read on Charley Casserly and what he is up to. Doubt he will ever come back to Redskin Park but according to Shapiro he lives back in DC now and did not get the NFL position he was seeking....

I just read this too, good post. I don't see him comin back, but this article shows how our front office lacks contacts & networking w/in the league, IMO, and CC at least did a good job of finding out about players. If he were here we wouldn't have signed AA.

I'd blame that on Norv.

It was a lose/lose that year anyway, it was either Shuler or Dilfer.

You can't 2nd guess that one. Everyone had Dilfer and Shuler as can't misses at the time.

That's true, but it's also ture that Dilfer is the prime example used in the arguement that a team doesn't need a good QB to win a Superbowl.

Take a look at this link of the 1994 draft...there were PLENTY of big players on that list, but that might have been the worst QB draft year of all time.

Quite true. I am a huge SEC fan and I think if you asked anyone who followed the SEC if Heath Shuler was going to be a good pro they would have said yes.

What the current front office does not do is somehing I wish someone at Redskin Park would be able to pull off was the trade Casserly made with Mike Ditka when we got all the draft picks from the Saints - absolute steal.

But I don't see Gibbs working with any GM as he wants to prove to everyone that holding down both the coach and GM positions can work.

A trade like that would only happen again is if Ditka came back to coach.

Nobody is that crazy to give away so much, that one fell into our laps.

You have to give Casserly some props for making that happen though.

Casserly can be pegged w/some bad picks, as most gm's can. Shuler was not a bad pick, he just didn't turn out to be the player we'd hoped, there's a big difference. You can only draft guys based on their past & their potential. Shuler had big upsides w/both, w/no history of off field problems. That he didn't become a solid pro qb is for many reasons, but I bet the vast majority of GMs at the time had him rated high. Same w/Desmond Howard, good guy, good teamate, never became a star (except his SB MVP).
I would go so far as to say that Norv screwed up Shuler's confidence by opting for Frerotte, when in that preseason they were neck and neck. Shuler had a lot more upside.
Bad draft picks & personel decisions happen when teams take players that have a history they DIDN'T find out about, whether it's a bad knee or rap sheet.

Actually I am not saying get Casserly tommorow - I just prefer the team hire a competent GM with a good long term vision of building through the draft and picking up a good free agent or two to compliment the mix.

I think you would agree like most on the board that Vinny Cerrato is not that person as he left the 49ers in shambles and his track record here is not something to brag about.

How many teams in the NFL would bring in Vinny Cerrato as their main personelle man? Maybe the Lions as Matt Millen is awful. Other than that I thnk most teams would take a pass on him and tell Cerrato he can get his online gig at ESPN he used to have.
