Gameplan: NY
hey Matty. i think you should add an official PostGame thoughts and official GamePlan for next opponent threads along with the official Game thread in these boards and make them temporarily sticky. just to consolidate a little.
now that the fog of war is settling, we gotta plan just like Gibbs and The Supreme Court (our fogey assistant coaches) are doing. whatever you say about the Giants, they have MUCH better receivers than Tampa. Amani Toomer has given more trouble to the 'Skins than any other receiver in recent history. our secondary will be tested again like in the Rams preseason game. hopefully Williams blitzes 'for real' this time but relies more on the LBs and leaves our safeties (Bowen, Williams made a man outta you) in to defend more. ST should be out there for this game, keeping an eye on Shockey, and knocking the ball loose from Hilliard, Toomer, and well Barber. offensively, we gotta execute a LOT better. Coles can't be quiet for this game, we gotta finish off the rest of any self-esteem Will Allen may have left over from the Owens bitching. the Oline needs to polish up a good start, giving even more time to Brunell (yes no sacks, but too many hurries/hits) and make better holes against 8man fronts for Portis. yes that's asking a lot from this Oline, but this is the product of Gibbs and Bugel here, and the pressure is all on them. c'mon DirtBags. can we at least see that whole snap thing at 100%? Strahan will be a big test for Kenyatta Jones. Special Teams gotta lotta work to do this week. can't leave everything to Bowen! (or the kicker!) |
I think if we blitz NY well, there shouldn't be many long passing plays. They simply won't have enough time to get it off. I expect to see some of the short 5-7 yard dumpoffs. TB had some success with this against us.
I don't think it will be a Strahan vs Jones contest - atleast not on plays where the QB is expected to sit in the pocket. I think it will be more like Strahan vs Jones & Rasby. The Bucs D is a lot better than the Giants'. I expect to see better play (ie bigger plays) from our offensive weapons this game. |
good ideas thanks Ill
|
Tampa never figured out what Washington was doing on those Blitz packages. NY is worse then Tampa is at stopping the Blitz. So I'd watch the game film from last week on NY & prepare to attack their weaknesses!
Toomer is good, but when you have no time to read the D & make an accurate throw you lose :FIREdevil I'm predicting the Skins will be 2 - 0 winning the game 27 - 10. |

Antonio Pierce will be KEY in getting to either sideline, (thats why Williams needs speed, re. K.Mitchell) and hopefully LavarCus (Washrrington?) can recover quick enough from any missed backfield intrusions. good point about Strahan. Jones will definitely get some help because Brunell won't be lookin at Strahan since he's a lefty. would be great if we saw Cooley do some damage this game, catching and blocking. |
Ball control is the key in this one. Keep the ball out of Shockey's hands as he has just absolutely killed us the past 2 years. I think Taylor will be brought onto the field to cover Shockey on 3rd downs.
Look for a heavy dose of Portis left behind Dockery and Samuels on a weak right defensive front for the Midgets. ST must come to play as this is a division game and wins just don't come easy but a loss surely can be handed by not playing well in all three phases. |
Thanks ill, that is a good idea. And Matty, thanks for considering it.
1. No doubt NY's WR's are better. But - both QB's are gonna get flustered by a pressure defense and, as one Skin said, it's all about disguising the pressure. Whether it's safeties, corners or LB's - the blitzes need to be disguised and the remaining defenders disciplined. Neither, I think will be a problem for the defense. 2. As for the Offense, this will not be TBays defense. The DB's and LB's are simply not as good. The defense as a whole doesn't pursue like TBays (few do). I think this is a great 2nd game for the Skins. The Gints appear to be a below average team with some good and some bad qualities. TBay's team was so lopsided (all D no O) that the Skins can use the Gints to see how they fair against mediocre O and D. I see a similar game plan for both sides of the ball but with more success on O. |
sure guys, just wanna contribute.
sucks Barrow can't play vs. the team that made him huh? well, considering how Pierce has been playing maybe not.. gotta keep an eye on those WR and Barber screens...should be fun to see our offense against this D. can't wait. |
I watched the Philly-NY game and Westbrook broke loose a couple of times. I look for Portis to be even better this week, no doubt that Bugel took it hard that his guys weren't giving Portis much room to run after his big gain. So here's how I'd gameplan.
1) Run Clinton Run. There will only be more holes from here on out. With Gibbs and Bugel out of the game so long, TB was a great way for them to get inundated with what's changed. The offense will get better and they will run the ball more effectively. I look for at least two more Portis tds. 2) Pressure. You know its coming, I know its coming and the Giants know its coming. But as long as Kurt Warner is under center we've got to put people in his face. Hit him a couple of times and he'll either fumble or throw a pick. 3) Where's Sean? I don't like seeing the talented rookie on the sideline, but if he channels his aggression on to the field (ala LaVar in the USA today article) then he should be at his playmaking best. If he gets on the field, he will make a play. 4) Wideouts anyone? The passing game is coming around slowly and Rod Gardner is still catch one, drop one. The cover 2 employed by the Bucs may have shackled us a little, but I see Coles and Thrash having big games. Skins 30 Giants 9 |
Same keys as last week, and for any week for that matter
1) Establish the run and control the clock 2) Stop the run 3) Win the turnover battle Would also like to see some improvements in ST coverage and maybe a bit more efficiency from the passing game. |
i'm glad others agree that the NY WRs are better and that they'll be a better test of our D ;) CRT was ripping me a new asshole for saying the same thing in another thread for some reason :(
|
im way more worried about Tiki as a receiver in the flat than as a runner. our Dline SHOULD be able to stop their anemic running game. they are gonna try to throw short passes over the blitzers. our DBs need to play tight and to the inside against the 'dink' game, Warner shouldn't have time for the long strike. ST would cause absolute havok for these kind of plays...
|
i'm glad others agree that the NY WRs are better and that they'll be a better test of our D ;) CRT was ripping me a new asshole for saying the same thing in another thread for some reason :(
w/o a doubt, Hilliard and Toomer have been the worst divisional headaches against us for years...since Smith and Irvin |
yeah i doubt we'll hold tiki to 30 yds. rushing. but i think either way the giants are not ready for a blitzing D, esp. at this juncture of the season (what with warner and manning chuckin the rock). it should be pretty basic. open up our passing game through portis and the running game. and like u guys are saying, look for a big day from the entire offense this time. skins should win this with ease. call it...
31-10 |
since their secondary is bad too, i hope gibbs uses it to get brunell some more confidence in the passing game, cause i know dallas games aren't the place to try things...
|
I think we need to Run with Portis to set up the pass. The Giants have pretty good defensive line/ Linebackers, but a horried secondary. So well just pound it with Portis all day and then every now and then throw a ball to Coles, or Thrash or Gardner. I think we need to put up at most 17 points to win this game.
Defensivley, this should be a total mismatch. Their offensive line is horrible, they will have a pretty bad quarterback at htis point playing. We should be able to put pressure and force them to make bad decisons. |
I cant decide if I want to start Toomer in my fantasy league this week. I hate playing against the skins, but Toomer usually dominates us.. The past doesnt mean anything but its somethign to consider...
|
I have the same problem SkinsnCanes. I ussually just dont like to start guys who are playing the skins'. Steve Smith is out for me so I'll probobly end up starting him. I dont think he will have ahuge day, personally. GOD I hope our defense comes ready to play like they did last week, casue they should eat the Giants for lunch.
|
well its toomer or i gamble on a rookie. Clayton or fitzgerald.
|
I see Betts and Cooley being bigger factors this week. The Giants game plan will most likely be to control the clock with Barber and Dayne. One way to keep them from controlling the clock is to control it ourselves. So we'll lull them with a lot of carries to Portis and Betts and short to medium passes to Cooley...then BAM! we hit them the 55-yard flea-flicker TD to Coles to put the game away.
Then in the post-game press conference, in an obvious dig at Coughlin, Gibbs will say "Well on that play, the safety bit and Coles had man on man coverage down the field, I guess the safety made his decision to attack the run a little too early." I'm really not expecting us to show much, not until Dallas! |

"I think we need to put up at most 17 points to win this game."
I think points will be at a premium in this game, not because we're going up against an elite defense like Tampa, but because it's going to be a rainy a$$ day on sunday. Even Spurrier would admit, "not a good day to pitch it around". 1. They better work on those botched center-qb exchanges cuz that ball will be slippery. 2. Agree with most, that just handing it off to Portis and short passes to Cooley+Coles will be the way to go on offense. Time of possession will be in our favor. 3. On defense, I expect to see more blizting - that's the best way to take Toomer and Hilliard out of the game. 4. As we've done since the first game this preseason, the D will continue to create 2 turnovers per game - what better chance of creating turnovers than to pound Warner and Barber. 5. ST Kick coverage units will definitely pick up their play once Gibbs and Danny Smith figure out the right line-up for the coverage unit. Prediction: Morton takes one to the house in this game & Skins win 17-3. As as aside, two extreme positives from the last game. 1. When Brunell got nailed by a hit last week, linemen were picking him up - something we never saw them do for Ramsey/Hasselback last year. 2. We got the ball back with 5:36 to play in the 4th Q, and we gave it back to TB with less than 20 seconds left - that's what you want to see - ball control and excellent clock management. |
First, as stated before, we have to establish ball possession. The way to beat this team is to keep their offense on the bench. Tiki Barber can take it the distance and has had pretty good games against us in the past. (Before Gregg Williams of course).
Secondly, we should go for the Giants juggular with a balance of offensive plays that keeps them off balance. Brunell has to get enough reps in the air and get used to throwing into better secondary's in the future. I'd like to see Coles, Gardner, Thrash and McCants used a little more in deep passes. The Giants secondary is very suspect and we should score at will against it. This will not be a conservative game by no standards. I predict Redskins 35, Giants 7 : Portis 2TDs, Arrington 1TD, Coles 1TD, Cooley 1TD That's Whats up! |
I like it!

I think there is no better time for us to head to NY. The starting QB is pissed because he got benched and the coach didn't have to guts to tell him. The rookie QB, who told Warner he was benched, got absolutely rocked. The team is fighting with the coach. The weather is bad which hurts the deep ball (which I'm not convinced either of the gints QB's can throw right now anyway).
ON THE OTHER HAND. The SKins are buying into Gibbs and his sytem. Guys are working out on their off days. The o-line is feeling good about themselves and taking ANY hits on the QB personally. The defense is flying around the ball. So here's what we need to do: 1. run, run, run 2. stretch the field with Laverneous and Thrash to open up the underneath routes for Colley, Rasbey, Gardner, Portis etc... and get Brunell is a groove. 3. blitz the crap out of them and try to get to warners fragile ego early. 4. not allow the deep ball to get us by having the FS double up on Tommer when he's more than 15yds down the field. This could be a huge win, in NY, for the skins if they keep proressing from their first game. |
we really need to tee off in this game and come into the MNF game vs DallASS with monstrous momentum.
gotta really hone our offense, both ground and air. and we gotta see what teams will do when they know the blitz is coming and learn how to stop THAT too. |
I expect to see more passing in this game. Yes, we must establish the run, but the gints will be keying on that, and thier secondary is WEAK. Look for more play action and trickery; also look for Cooley, Sellars, and even Rasby to get throws. I'm sure Gibbs wants to get Brunell going.
I bet we'll be more selective in our blitzing on Sunday. Toomer, Shockey, and Tiki are bigger threats than anything the bucs had. The bucs AVERAGED 4-yards per pass. YOu can blitz all day long against that. How bad can it possibly hurt you? I doubt we blitz on 70% of our plays again. |
i watched the nyg/pe game last week, and the gmen were able to get decent pressure on mcnabb, but they could not stop to at all.i would think that the skins would run portis and betts a lot and throw to cooley on the play action, coles as well.gibbs will not open up the playbook anymore than he has too,he will never tip his hand to parcels early.williams will blitz more than he did the bucs, count on it.warner is slower than johnson is,if the skins get ten sacks it wo'nt surprise me.i bet the punter does'nt rush down the field like he did last week.did you guys see that hit jeremiah trotter put on him?ole michael"mr ed"strahain's gonna see portis so much he's gonna have burgundy and gold nightmares.

Only thing I'd add is going back to an earlier post about the dink and dunk the Buccs used last week. They didn't make it work for 2 reasons 1) no deep threat (once Galloway went out) and no running threat.
The Giants do offer some of both of these, even if they aren't one of the best. They have a better running game than the Buccs and Toomer can get deep an often. We MUST tighten down on the coverage, but I suspect Williams will do this with some unusual coverage schemes married in with the blitz. We must also contain Barber. if we funnel them up the middle, we should stop them all game, but cannot let Barber to the outside with space. When not blitzing, Arrington and Washington will have to be on their game (something I don't doubt). Likewise Springs and Smoot must take away the 5-10 yards completely and discourage them from going deep - I agree with Taylor covering Shockey, but only if he's learned the lesson about angles from last week against Galloway. Offense is simple - keep the running game going all day and make the passing game effective as an alternate to stop them keying on Portis. We don't need to go deep if we keep Portis moving, but we can't drop balls or underthrow like last week. The Giants don't have a great secondary, but we can't waste plays or risk INT's too often else we WILL get punished sooner rather than later. |

The Giants do offer some of both of these
exactly. the heart of the Giants is weak, not its arms. the Giants have very legitmate weapons. Toomer, Hilliard, Shockey and Barber air or ground. they will gameplan to lob over into the holes Williams's blitzers leave. this would be an ideal opportunity for the Dline themselves (and Griffin vs. his former team) to make a name for themselves and attack their weak core: the questionable Oline and Warner. leaving more of our defense to deal with all the potential playmakers. watch Williams not blitz as often, especially with our safeties, someone (Pierce vs. the run, Taylor/Bowen vs. the pass) has to stop the blood if Warner slips one past. |
Now wait a minute..As I mentioned, the Giants O, like ours can roll up the yardage..and the points are gonna come...17 in Philly opening day aint horrible

holding tiki to under 100 yards rushing and under 60 yards receiving, toomer under 100 receiving gives us the best shot at winning (as long as portis doesn't have bad fumbles, which doesn't seem to be a problem)
if you ask who's gonna get more on the ground, i'd say its probably us... if you ask who gets more passing yards this game.... i couldn't tell you, and i won't make any bets. but we did put up 291 on a good D, so i wouldn't be completely shocked if we had a 400yd+ game here. |

i agree, to win, the gints need to A)stuff portis (doubtful), and B)beat the blitz...
that's about as complicated as it'll get... |
