Pre-training camp power rankings from Peter King

24. Washington: I agonized over this one, because I think the Redskins are moving in the right direction. I like young quarterback Jason Campbell. I like Joe Gibbs' ability to make owner Dan Snyder a more patient man and I like -- really like -- the addition of tackling machine London Fletcher-Baker. I could see the 'Skins winning 10, but maybe in 2008, not 2007.

Re: Pre-training camp power rankings from Peter King

I've repeatedly said that, if members of the media "have it out for the Skins," Peter King is not among that crowd. Peter King reversed course on Monk and the Hof (admitting he was wrong for all those years), always has good things to say about Gibbs, and is pretty even-handed. I think we have reason to be optimistic about the upcoming season, but since preseason rankings don't depart dramatically from last season's standings, I can't fault him for ranking us so low.

I agree with PK 100%. The skins will be lucky to win 7 or 8 this year but next year I look for more like 9 to 11.

I agree with PK because rankings arent suppose to change much from the season before. But why are you always so pessimistic? It is almost as if you waiting for it to happen so you can tell people you told em so...

Peter King is a tool. Why would anyone pay attention to what he says?

Re: Pre-training camp power rankings from Peter King

Peter King still writes sports-related articles? I kinda put him out of my mind a while back. Thanks for reminding me that his opinion still has the same amount of meaning for me.

As for me, I have the Skins ranked somewhere in the 1 thru 32 range. This assessment's accuracy all hinges heavily on:
-injury problems or lack thereof
-heart and determination
-team unity
-QB pressure: providing and preventing
-a little bit of luck
-Alstott's elbow not getting within 5 feet of the endzone
-Betts not fumbling the ball away at a crucial moment
-the kicker not missing 2 or 3 FG attempts in the first game
-not letting Eli throw up ducks and the secondary still not be able to get a hand on it
-Archuleta not blowing cove..oh wait, nevermind, that can't happen now

Nice post, and I agree, King does not have it in for the 'Skins. He and Snyder are on good terms; King spent time with Snyder before the draft this year and King portrayed Snyder as an owner willing to do everything he could to help the team win. And he praised the team for the Landry pick; crediting Snyder for avoiding the sexy move of jumping up to get Calvin Johnson.

Anyone who doesn't buy the hype that the Redskins are super bowl bound are obviously anti-Redskins. The fact that we've been terrible for years upon years might have something to do with no one reaching on us anymore.

Re: Pre-training camp power rankings from Peter King

Pre training camp rankings? You gotta be kidding me. I can see ff ranking of individual players to help guys draft, but come on. You can't rank teams if they haven't been in camp much less play any preseason games. Even so, I can't see us as low as 24. I think we will miss the playoffs, but not by too much, a game or two.

Hopefully we can be this season's Saints. We have the talent and fire power, we just have been missing the chemistry, and that has been the most important thing. No Chemistry= Bad season.

jsarno 07-21-2007 12:22 AM

Re: Pre-training camp power rankings from Peter King

Well, we won 10 a couple years back when everyone predicted 4 or so. We have a better team with better chemistry than any season in recent memory. Sure we have our questionable players, but if they just show up and play a little better than average, we'll hit 10 wins again this year.

yes but we are in the same exact situation this year that they were in exactly 1 year ago. Questions about Brees returning from injury, no respect, We are in the same place they were.

Brees wasn't always a stud, and as quake pointed out, he came off an injury. Campbell could be the next Brees. I hope.

we dont have respect because we havent earned it yet. we know were number one in the nfl for the hype machine. We will get respect when we start winning. Hopefully before i get to middle age. Brees was a proven qb before last year. JC still is unfortually a question mark. I hope he can keep improving. But who knows. He only has one wr treat and a good te.

Like I said. The Saints were in that same boat, and coming into last year Drew Brees was a question mark at best for the Saints coming off a torn labrum. I want a 3,000yard 25TD season from Campbell. I think he will get it. Our first 6 games are winable if Portis and Betts tear it up like I know they will.

we will be lucky to be 3-3 after the first 6 games. we will lose to phil and ny and maybe gb or ariz

Even winning won't get us respect...we didn't get it when we won 10 games a couple years ago. The saints didn't get too much respect either.
JC is HUGE question mark...I agree. But he has a lot of potential. I think we do have a good WR corp. Moss / Llyod and ARE are good wr's, and with JC being a little more accurate, then they will flourish.

Green Bay? unproven running back. No way we lose there.
Arizona? Almost choked on my beer when I read that. Leinart will throw picks all day. Arizona is not as good as everyone says.
NY? First important game without Tiki and "mistake prone Manning" making all the decisions. No we win those 3.

We will be 5-1 through 6 games with 6-0 is a possibility if we pull an upset in Philly.

yea winning 10 games every couple of years wont get you respect you have to do it year in and year out like NE,Phil,IND etc. then you will get respect like we had in the 80's. LLoyd stinks moss is great.

We will smash Miami.
Philly is the only question.
And we should run(literaly) through the next 4.

leinhart will pick us apart. Farve always has a field day against us when was the last time we won in GB/?? 89 or 90. we will be lucky to be 3-3. Who are we to take any team for granted that we better than. Where have we proved that were some great team. we were 5-11 not 11-5 last year. Our dline still stinks, JC a ? Portis is a ? only one good wr ,have a whole at guard with wade he a ?> springs in a ? he always hurt.

I hate all this "pre-camp", "pre-season" ranking crap. It's equivelant to a bunch of women sitting in a hairdressers talking about shoes. Regardless of whether or not P. King gives the Skins "some love" (hate that expression) he is, and always will be, a donkey cock.

we will be lucky to go in our divison 3-3 that would be a great year for us. 2-2 in the afc if were lucky so thats 5-5 we will lose to chi, ariz and gb and tb. to go 7-9 or if were lucky 8-8.

Carter played well down the stretch, Montgomery is coming around, and griffin is solid. Throw in the new LB system, and the new secondary, and our D LINE will look a whole lot better.
I agree we should have addressed the issues, but we didn't, so we need to make what we have work. The secondary is strong now and that was more of an issue than anything last year. We'll have pressure from the LB's too.

I seem to remember everybody being pretty confident we would beat Minnesota at home in the Monday Night season opener last year.

I see the same type of confidence with Miami too.

After the outright pathetic embarassment of 2006, no opponent should be taken lightly this year. Unless the Redskins start out hot, the burden of proof is on them to tell the skeptics and naysayers how wrong they are.

Come on, does anyone really deny that 2006 was the absolute worst season for the Redskins in living memory? I know '93 and '94 were worse in total wins, but in terms of expectations, let's not forget how awful it truly was. I think everyone here was completely sucker-punched as far as how bad our team was.

Until Art Monk is in the Hall, nothing Peter King writes should show up on this board. A total boycott of all that is Peter King. He may have changed his mind as well as his vote but the damage had already been done, Art is not in because of King's previous actions. ART IN THE HALL!!

This seems right to me, especially when you're looking at the media--what have we done to be higher than 24th right now? We don't deserve ANY love, until we actually show we are a better team. King was actually pretty balanced here, IMO.

(And I fully agree with the "training camp rankings are silly" sentiment! God, I can't wait for actual football!!!)
