Breaking news: Mets agree to Santana deal

Omar Minaya kept telling rival executives this winter that he was going to land a star pitcher, a guy who could lead his rotation, and a month ago, none of his peers imagined how that could happen. But on Tuesday afternoon, the New York Mets agreed to a tentative deal with the Minnesota Twins for arguably the best pitcher on the planet, Johan Santana, for a package of four prospects.

Re: Breaking news: Mets agree to Santana deal

Well....F***. I'm not nearly as into baseball as I am football, but as a Cardinals/Yankee fan (screw it, I can have two baseball teams, I dont care that much), that sucks for two reasons. I really wanted the Yanks to land Johan, and I can't stand that the Cards (who suck also) will have to compete with the Mets now....

Is it Opening Day of Football season yet??

Now let's see what do the Orioles do with Bedard. Will they pull the trigger on the trade with the Mariners now? Or hold off a little longer?

Orioles are such a mess, whatever they do I'm sure will backfire horribly on them though

The O's and the Nats should just merge into one embarrassment instead of 2.

With the Lerners pushing the Nats now, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Nats competing in the NL East within the next 2-3 years, upping the payroll and trying to field a contender. Which they should be able to do with the new stadium and excitement that will draw.

Angelos on the other hand needs to have cement boots tied to his feet and be thrown into the Inner Harbor.

Even with Santana, the Mets will figure out a way to combust once September rolls around.

smooty, he is such a good young pitcher, why do they want to trade him?

I agree with you across the board.

I just read that the Nat's minor league system went from being ranked dead last in 2007 to now being ranked 9th in 2008. Granted, these are just rankings and we all know they don't always pan out, but I don't think they can be completely ignored.
The Nats might not be all that good now but at least it looks like they have a plan whereas the O's are even starting to lose the die-hards.

Bedard said towards the end of this past season that he'd like to test the free agent waters...that being said, at that point, he was under contract through 2008...

He's an ace star on a sinking ship and sees the writing on the wall. Best to get maximum value for him now and develop the arms you have. However, it looks like Angelos might get in the way of that, like he did back when vetoed trades of guys like Bonilla.

Re: Breaking news: Mets agree to Santana deal

This sucks!!! Not only are the mets becoming the yankees, but they are getting in the way of a strong Phillies team.

I wouldn't worry about the Mets too much. They always find a way to implode when it comes to crunch time.

I saw him pitch last year in person, he's AMAZING. He 3-hit my White Sox and outdueled Buehrle for a 2-0 complete game win.

Bedard is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He was leading MLB in strikeouts last year before his late-season injury. He still finished 4th. Even on one of the worst teams in baseball, he managed a 13-5 record.

Any team that gets him has a new #1 pitcher, unless he's sharing a roster with Peavy or Santana.

Re: Breaking news: Mets agree to Santana deal

Bedard is awesome. It's a shame that the Orioles Front Office can't get their heads out of their asses long enough to build not only the rotation, but the team around him. Lock him up with top 10 starter money and go with it. Instead, Angelos and MacPhail will hide behind their "rebuilding" moniker and try to use Bedard to get more pieces to the puzzle.
