Cops bound 6-year-old’s wrists with zip ties as she begged not to be arrested, suit says

Kaia Rolle was 6 years old when police officers tightly bound her wrists with zip ties and “perp walked” her through the halls of her Florida school in front of teachers, parents and other students, according to her family’s lawsuit, which says she was arrested over having a tantrum.

“No, don’t put handcuffs on,” a tearful Kaia told officers as they placed zip ties around her wrists at Lucious & Emma Nixon Academy Charter School in Orlando, Florida, on Sept. 19, 2019, police body camera footage of her arrest published by CBS News shows.

As one officer led her outside the school to a police car, Kaia is heard begging for a second chance and pleading not to be arrested, according to the footage.

After she was detained, she was driven to a juvenile detention center where her mugshot was taken as she stood on a step stool — because she wasn’t tall enough, an amended complaint filed Sept. 18 says.

Sounds pretty stupid on the surface but I'm sure there is a long back story not told. I mean what does a six year old have to do to have the cops called.

Working in a school there are myriad reasons that police would be brought in but all situations would be for the safety of the student i.e. anything from abuse to weapon access. None of them would involve a six year old being taken out in zip ties. If a student needs to be removed for safety it is so easy to just escort them especially a 6 year old. The problem with Orlando is they do not provide SROs to the elementary school level. SROs go through intensive training in how to properly handle and deescalate situations with minors that the general police force does not have training. Regardless this was an easily avoidable situation that lead to trauma for this girl.

Michigan man with suspended license logs into Zoom court hearing while driving


A Michigan man with a suspended driver's license joined a digital court hearing about his case from behind the wheel of a vehicle he was driving.

Corey Harris did not physically appear in court for his hearing on May 15. Instead, he dialed into the Zoom call — while he was driving, according to video of the hearing posted on Washtenaw County Judge Cedric Simpson’s YouTube page.

Simpson asked Harris whether he was driving when he joined the hearing. He told Simpson that he was pulling into a parking spot at his doctor's office and would be ready for the hearing in "one second."

After a brief pause and Simpson’s confirming Harris was "stationary," the attorney representing Harris, Natalie Pate, who was in court that day, asked for an adjournment of two to four weeks.

"OK, so maybe I don't understand something," Simpson said after having appeared to review the case in front of him. "This is a driving while license suspended?"

Pate confirmed he was looking at a case involving driving without a license.

"And he was just driving? And he doesn't have a license?" Simpson asked.
